I received permission to search a yard this past weekend which used to have a bakery in the early 1900s. Great day to be out, nice and cool with a good breeze. No old coins found but uncovered this interesting watch fob at about 6 inches. It shows an old fashion fire hydrant, fire hose, axe and ladder. On the other side is written "The Whitehead + Hoag Co, Newark NJ" A little research shows the same item on ebay dating it to the 1890s. It has some surface bubbles but is in otherwise decent condition for being in the ground 100+ years. Thanks for looking. MM2

Hi MM2,
I hope you are doing well.

That is a very cool find. I like that it is from Newark, NJ. I would agree with the watch fob theory. Although where the hole is it looks like there was something else in the design that was punched out by the hole. Makes me wonder if the orignal design was for a watch fob or if that is just something it was turned into. My guess is the punched out item is a fireman's leather helmet...atleast thats what it looks like from the remaining part of the picture.

Happy hunting
