Great find there to bad it fell apart.way to go.
 

So should there be a sword nearby?

No sword. That's a bayonet scabbard tip. They commonly came loose from the leather scabbard and were lost/discarded.

It's a bayonet scabbard tip. Google " Gaylord bayonet". I believe they were mainly used on Springfields. I dug a whole one yesterday. Pretty cool!
