DAY1 HUGE FIELD<<AMAZING FIND 3500 YEARS OLD>>UPDATED2

My Dad joined the hunt today & used my back-up machine. We had to find somewhere new to do as I had finished the Sheep Field & Bullet Field. We drove to 1 farm but the grass was too long. So my dad suggested another field which had be eaten down flat by more sheep.

Normally I choose the hunt area but being a huge field I let him choose. He decided we should do the furthest corner.

As it got dark all we had were a few bits, the highlights being:

Broken Tudor Clothes fastener.
Medieval Coin Weight
Very worn Lizy Hammered silver coin
A roman Coin (not pictured as I left it around my dads to clean). Rang me and identified it as:
AE4 of Honorius AD395-423 (Roman's left Britain in 410)
Rev: Victory advancing left carrying trophy & dragging captive with Chi-Rho in field
This is my latest Roman Bronze coin!

On the way back to the car we kept our detectors on. Half way there I heard Dad get a good signal. After he dug it I said "Any good". No just a chisel thingy. So I carried on back to the car thinking it was iron rubbish. When we got there he was sorting out the rubbish & throwing it in the hedge. I looked over his shoulder and saw what I have only dreamed of finding. A Bronze Age Axe head. I picked it up & said "You know what this is". He said "well I wondered but it seemed to well made". ;D

Needs more research but it dates to about 1500BC thats 3500 years old!!!! ;D ;D ;D

Here is a similar type in a museum:

UPDATE:

The Axe is as follows:

A FLANGED AXE with FLARED POINT dating to the Early Middle Bronze Age (1800BC-1500BC).

It is the second development (Mark II of of axe heads, if you like). Therefore one of the earliest types that were produced in the UK.

This is still early research days & when I record it with the Museum. I will know more. Mine will be the first to be recorded near my town.

Nice finds, and the axe head is excellent. Certainly is small, isn't it. Wonder what they chopped with something that size? Anyhow, good thing you checked your dad's stuff before you chucked it. Do you always toss your junk in the hedgerows?

Its one of the smallest I have seen. I think it must have been for finer work like small branches or wood shaping as it would take for ever to cut a tree down.

Yes, wood shaping seems very plausible. Roughing out the wood before doing the fine carving perhaps? Absolutely phenomenal find. Congratulations!!!

WoW!!! That is really a find of a lifetime!!

What do you think that item is worth, and will you ever see any proceeds from this?

Awesome finds dugup! Those are some truly great relics.

A bronzeage axehead like that, and that one looks to be in really great shape, might only be worth $200-$300. I know it's ancient and all, but they just don't seem to command very high prices. A lot of Roman coins are the same way. I would kep it, and it would be a prize in any collection.

Under the terms of the Treasure Act of 1996, I can keep this object. Its worth about £100 which really doesn't reflect is rarity. I am voluntary reporting it as it has great historial interest in our area as its the only one found (properly reported anyway).

I had earlier in the day thrown away a piece of bronze slag which I thought to be Roman, but in hindsight might be Bronze Age. So I could have a Bronze Age smithy or settlement in the field. Its a big field so watch this space.......

Hey Dugfinds,

So under the Treasury Act terms what does voluntarily reporting it mean? Do they ask you to loan to a museum while still retaining property rights?

That truely is an AMAZING item. Good for you in finding that, and I hope you find the smithy!

Here's a link that I thought was very informative about bronze age casting:

The Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) records it on a database open to all on the web. They take pictures & properly identify it & I give them the find location. Although I will hide it to the public. This link is a great resource for all, see below:

Hey Dugfinds
thats some realy great finds you and your father found. Congrats to the both of you.
As for your Laws your very lucky compared to me.Here in portugal, I wish they would have similar or even adopt the same regulations as in the UK. Basicaly here its ilegal in almost any part of the country to MD, even to own one becomes ilegal.....so you can imagine what happens when you find a relic here,If you tell the musems...they will confiscate it in the states name......
Anyhow, myself and many other MD ers are hoping one day out Gov will adot the same regulations as the UK.
Untill then happy hunting

The Laws here are pretty good. Before 1996 you could find a hoard of 50 or more Bronze Axe heads in 1 hole & keep them. But quite rightly they changed the Law to include Hoards of Bronze Age items.

The bad side is for those like me who are honest enough to declare Treasure have to wait over 1.5 years to get the money (or object back if they don't want it). Believe me I know its very slow & sucks, seeing as I have to hand them in within 14 days of finding it! Their guidelines say it should take 1 year which is plenty of time, right?

Hi again Dugfinds

"The bad side is for those like me who are honest enough to declare Treasure have to wait over 1.5 years to get the money (or object back if they don't want it). Believe me I know its very slow & sucks, seeing as I have to hand them in within 14 days of finding it! Their guidelines say it should take 1 year which is plenty of time, right?"

So they take your item for up to 1.5 years and then they determine whether they give you money or the item back? Huh? What if you don't want to sell it but keep it yourself or sell it yourself?
