:hello:

I have been finding some neat stuff over the last week or so :o the snow has restricked any detecting and it snowed last night again ::) so it was back to the scrap Bucket

The first thing I noticed was a small round Bronze object :icon_scratch: this turned out to be a coin that someone had started to turn into a ring :o can make out a right facing portraite of :dontknow: but can't make anything out from the reverse :'(

A couple of Roman items turned up :) a Roman nail cleaner and part of a Bell :o I also found a small Saxon Catterpillar Brooch :o :o

A piece of Bronze open work also which I think could be Viking :dontknow: but I'm not quite sure :dontknow: and a fragment of Medieval purse bar ;D

It's what I said it is, you can clearly see the right facing portrait.

The Brooch is still one I haven't found. :o

I agree its most likely Anglo-Sandinavian (Viking) but its just a bit to delicate for a Stirrup Mount. I've seen similar sold a Mounts, but like many of this items, what it was mounted to is a mystery. Maybe a scabbard but I'm not very confident other than its typically Viking, so an excellent save :icon_thumright:

Ahhh so they would bend the coin in that fashion and use the outer part to produce a ring?. Thats really cool. You have a very nice scrap bucket. Enjoy your post

Sort of :P usually it would be hit with a hammer on edge, around the coin until the desired width, then the inside would be drilled out, and the legend would be inside. We used to do it with Silver coins when I was younger

Re: More Finds from the Scrap Bucket

I like that hammered up copper with the pieplate edge, I found a cartwheel done the same way a couple of years back, I never quite figured out why that was done to it.
