We met yesterday with a few hunting buddies in a wooded area near the rhine. You can expect everything from roman to modern there. And this day was a good one! Some of us went downhill into a valley which had seen lots of roman activity, but four of us decided to stay on top near an old road. We started with a few musketballs, but we got more and more over the whole area. Looks like a 1800s skirmish there. We ended with 10 to 20 bullets each, but no regiment buttons :( . We had a few nails, a roman circular mount, crotal bell and some coins as we worked up the hill. The highest point of the hill was littered with WWII crap, but i managed between tent buttons, casings, a pack of razorblades and a pioneer axe the best find of the day. A beautiful gold plated brass spur dated 12th-13th century :hello2: . The two buttons i found may be around 1600. The coins are 1800.
Im pretty sure that we go back to this place soon as our fields are all planted....

If I found those two buttons in the UK, I would say 17th C as well

The COMPLETE spur is an amazing find, we only getting the bits the plough left behind. You understated this one I'm voting BANNER!!!

Your finds look to be getting better  Can't remember if you got the big coil yet?

I know nothing about anything really but that spur being complete and all probably would look real nice in a glass case also inside a museum? ??? Or am I being too generous? Great recovery either way :notworthy:

No, this is what you might expect in a Museum! This is one of the earliest types your ever likely to find! (but complete is near impossible)

Re: Hot day with hot finds. gilded spur 12. century!

Thanks all! Im very happy with that one. Gold plated spurs are a sign of the status of its owner. Only knights had them. And yes...its complete. A buddy found the small buckle for the leather strap too!!! It was only a few yards away. I trying to get pics and the buckle from him. :tongue3:
Hi Cru! :hello: Thanks for Your confirmation! Yes the finds are getting better, research pays off. But i have to drive 70 to 80 miles now. Still using the 11" stock coil in the woods. Have the 12x15 for the fields. Its a good year with the extreme dry spring. You can see cropmarks everywhere! Got some roman shards this morning when i was out with the dogs on a field i never expected roman... :hello2:

Sorry, when I said large, I meant the 11", the 9" is our stock coil in the UK. The 12x15 I find quite unstable on my settings, but I think I need to get used to it/change settings. The 11" is my fav at the moment :icon_thumright:
