I got out this morning for a much needed hunt. It has been cold here lately, frozen ground is not my friend.

It finally warmed up, and I went back tot he school where I find all my good stuff.

I am looking to score a Walking Liberty half, since I have NEVER found one.

Today I found a 1918 D Merc towards the end of my hunt. That made me happy since I was just digging some clad and some head stamps.

If head stamps had a bounty on them, I would be typing this from my yacht. Those things are everywhere in this site.

Finally, I got a decent signal that shot up the scale towards big silver. Pulled out a 6 inch plug, and the next 3 inches of dirt before I located the coin with my pinpointer in the bottom of the hole.

This was about 10 inches down.

All coins from this field are heavily corroded. The site is next to Puget Sound, and is almost underwater during the rainy times.
I did not even look at the coin in the field, I just came back home to clean them up, hoping for a Walker.

Alas, it was not meant to be.

But this is apparently a key date Barber half.

I will take it.

Lady Liberty, I am coming for you this year.

This is my second as well, also from this site. The detail on it is terrific, especially on the reverse. The shield has very crisp lines on it. I wish that I did not have to deal with this corrosion, but what do you do...

If you plan on just keeping it I would personally let it sit in some lemon juice. Might lift a bunch of the black away. That is just me since I keep them all.

I have found a lot of big silver at this site, and so far my procedure is to verify that the coin is not key date, then I scrub the crud off as gently as I can.

This coin is the first to give me pause, since high grades can bring pretty good money.

I will be interested in what the experts say as to what I should do with it.

PCGS charges 2 percent of the graded value, or 30 dollars minimum. They clean it and grade it professionally.

If the experts on here concur, I will probably give that a go. It sounds like fun.

20 years ago, I found a 1919D quarter in great shape, and sold it on ebay for $450. The buyer was happy, and I took that as a sign that I left money on the table.

I'll take a key date Barber Half over a Walker any day but hopefully your day will soon come! Nice Merc too! :icon_thumright:

I am sure that I will feel that way once I find a Walker.

This site has yielded a 1901 Morgan, a 1901 Barber quarter, 2 barber halves, and a dozen silver dimes, all barber and Mercs. There has to be a Walker there somewhere.

I'll take the Barber half any day, congratulations! :occasion14:

I can hardly find Barber dimes. I have one Barber quarter and no Barber halves. A walking liberty half was the second silver I ever found. Havent seen onesince. Great spot you have

I'd love to hunt with yah! I'm up in anacortes. I have good luck at old schools on fidalgo island...

Coinfetcher, That would be great. Are you free tomorrow AM? I have no problem sharing my sites!

What's a head stamp?

Beerguy/Coinfetcher: I'm up here in Concrete, and would dearly love to get out
for a (nice) day of coinshootin'...been way too long!

Once the weather warms up a bit, I'll be dropping y'all a PM and hope
we can get together. I've also been researching some very old sites
up here in the valley, and it'd be great to have someone else along
to help me hunt them.

Great finds- too bad the water stains them like that. The Barber half is a better date with only 553K minted- Congrats!!

The brass end of a shotgun shell. It seems that back in the day, the townspeople would shoot skeet in this field. The ring in anywhere from a nickel signal to just below zinc penny, so I have to dig them all..

Dizzy, that sounds great. I do not get up 20 much, but I am sure that there are tons of sites.

I hit this site on weekend mornings, if anyone wants to come along, PM me.
