My 11 year old son joined Buckleboy and I on a hunt today in the cane fields. We offered him a Fisher 1266 to use but he declined and insisted he would just eyeball glass shards and pipe stems.

We set out to find what we would with our high tech detectors as Anthony set out with nothing more than his eyeballs and a small tin can.
Within 10 minutes Anthony was showing us 3 pipe stems and a handful of really awesome pottery and China shards.

Well, heres what just about gave us a heart attack! Anthony nonchalantly approached us and proclaimed "Hey daddy, look at this coin I found". BB and I looked up to see this young bandit holding in his fingers a 1801 half real that had been lying right on top of a cane row!!!
I dropped my detector in the mud, grabbed my chest like Red Fox would have done in an episode of Sanford and Son, and yelled "AAAAAAAAAAA EEEEEEEE"!!!! We were in shock!!

Later in the evening after returning home and cleaning our underwear out we all gathered for a finds cleaning party. A big congrats out to my boy on such an awesome find, without a metal detector!

HOLY SMOKES!!!! A BIG congrats to you Anthony. You the Man. :hello2:
I vote BANNER on that outstanding eyeball find. Heck, most of us will never find a 1/2 reale using a detector. :laughing9:

That is a find he will never ever forget, nor will you and B.B!What a deal!
When I was 6 years old I eyeballed a chinese coin, and even though I have dug several hundred since(and couldnt tell ya where I dug the last one)I still remember like yesterday, where, what the weather was like, and how that first one was laying there waiting for me to find it

Wow, what a find! Nice EYE! :icon_cyclops_ani:

Reminds me of the last Spanish silver that Kyle found. It was lying on top of the ground, (eyeball find). I would not mind finding predominantly Spanish silver instead of coppers.

He may quite not understand how awesome that coin is until he does this hobby for a long time and can look back on it and say, "That was my nicest coin and I can remember right where I found it." Great find. He must be over the moon.

Congratulations, Anthony!

You've learned: eyeballs work even when detectors don't. Long before detectors were invented, people had to use their eyes and minds. One without the other doesn't work well.

Like the pipe stems and ceramic shards too. Wonder if the shards and the coin were related.
