Hey Guys, Jeff and I got out yesterday for our weekly digging exploits and about 5 minutes after arriving to one of

our spots, I got a really good Silver signal on the MXT (+62)...and as it was about 10 inches from the sidewalk I

thought for sure that it would be a Merc or Rosie or something of that nature....But when I popped it out....my first

instinct was "Its a One Reale!" However, on closer inspection, I realized that this one was a coin that was MUCH

more rare in Virginia and was NOT a Spanish Reale....The reason for this is I saw the Jerusalem cross in the style

that France use to use in the old days......but I had to have alittle help from a couple of my friends to get

verification: thanks fellas :icon_thumleft:

It's pretty thin and worn but from what I've seen, this one is actually in really good shape from the others that I've seen that have been dug; and I was really amazed to find FRENCH silver here in Virginia... :o :o Hope you guys like

POOR OLE JEFF...He just couldn't seem to catch a break yesterday....He did manage one Eagle "I" and GS Eagle early in the day:

It looked beautiful from the inside :laughing9: :laughing9:

:o :o >:(

Throughout the rest of the day he was having a tough break and only dug a couple tent grommets....BUT LO, we
stopped and secured permission at one more place before the end of the day and he redeemed himself with some pretty cool finds including:

1973 South Dakota Medallion United States Bicentennial

And a couple Good buttons this time ;D

Eagle I, GS Eagle, and U.S. Pin, and rest of items from our hunt the day before

Here's a little more info. and the coin has to be either 1728 or 29. Listed under Lorraine - Duchy standard coinage. (It is silver not billon, so that is good)

The choices are.... Leopold Joseph (Leopold I) 1728 or 1729 or Francois III 1729

To know for sure you will have to either confirm the last digit is an 8, or see part of the Francois Legend. If the last digit is 9, or you can only confirm it's Leopold and can't see anymore, then you probably won't be able to determine the year.

I don't know IP....you might be right although it really does look like a "27"...I can see the "LEOP" quite clearly and definitely see the date....It could be a "28" though....I'll try to post a pic of it for you to look at.

I did notice that link you gave my has Leopold coins that are dated 1727 though....thanks for the help my friend :icon_thumleft:

Can you give some clarity to the +62 being a solid silver signal ? On the VDI scale on the MXT
and some other higher end Whites units , silver coins begin around +80-82 , This is also
consistent with the scale on the detector itself -- Just curious - Thanks ! Argentium.

The VDI reading is not only dependent on the type of metal, but its mass as well. The larger the coin (or other item) the higher the reading. Many of the cut pieces come in in the 40s, but a 2 reale might come in around 80. Same with gold, copper, or any other metal. So don't lock yourself into thinking that a silver coin, e.g., will always ID in a narow VDI range.

Indeed, glad you pointed that out to those that aren't aware, detectors go on SIZE and CONDUCTIVITY as Bill stated above. Hope this helps   :icon_thumleft:

Oh my God! My mind is blown! Great find!! :icon_thumleft:

EDIT: Hey, I just watched the vid on YouTube, cool stuff. I bought an MXT last week (my first MD). Can you tell me which coil that is you have on there? I imagine you use that coin mainly for coins. Can you tell me how you like it?

thanks!

Hey Bud, yes its called an Excelerator EQ2 coil 11x14 and it is one of the best coils on the market. I actually use it for ALL my relic and coin hunting, its super deep and very durable! You can pick one up from KellyCo and it will give you MORE depth without question! :icon_thumleft:  Hope this helps

Josh, those are some incredible finds. Those buttons founnd in one trip reminds me of the type luck that relic hunters back in the 1970s tell me they found on a routine basis. Unfortunately, I wasn't hunting back then and Dman was a baby-LOL. How many of that type silver coin have you found in VA before? Nice and HH, Quindy.
Yes, this area of Virginia is loaded with the Eagles, as a CW relic hunter, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I am Blessed to live in such a historic area for Colonial and Civil War relics...

As for the coin, it is a VERY RARE find for the U.S. I'm not aware of anyone finding one in Virginia before...Even Bill D. who posted the pics with the "100" Silvers dating back to the 1500s hasn't even ever dug a French Silver here. As Iron Patch said above, this coin wasn't even suppose to be here as it was not made for the colonies...and for it to be in Virginia, a ENGLISH colony, is very odd and rare.....I'm still pretty shocked that it popped out of my plug!

Yep, I was pretty happy with that Should Scale slide....alot of people would've thrown that away who weren't versed in CW relics ;D  :icon_thumleft: Thanks for the compliments on the coin and with your help trying to help me I.D. it my old friend :icon_thumleft:

What a beautiful coin. You guys have it going your way. Loved your video. May I ask what camera you are using? I want to start videoing some of my fines but don't know what camera to buy. Thanks for any info.

There is listings for Leopold 1727 30 Deniers, but none with the crowned eagle reverse and large cross with 4 small crosses, likes yours. If you clearly see the Leop it's either 1728 or 29, or the book is missing info.. (which I doubt going as far as it does to list varieties)

Josh, You guys are on fire. Because of the fact that civil war era relics are not found around my area I wasn't that interested in you guys finds. I always knew that the colonial stuff would turn up in your posts. I am impressed to say the least.

Hey Chris, thanks....honestly though these colonial relics turn up often as well as much as the civil war stuff....Most of the places I hunt are actually Colonial sites that subsequently saw some Civil War action. That cob I dug a couple years back on the banner came from a spot that I dug both on. Thanks my friend, I still can't believe that pop out of the hole...

That's a great silver man.

Nice video to. You guys are having a great yr. Keep up the persistence. It is paying off big time.
