175 year old lock with key!! Holy moly!!

I just found this lock today!! I have been wanting to find a lock on my property for a while! Its from a Second Seminole War campsite on my property!! So excited!! I wonder where the chest is... Paymasters box??!!

CORRECTION: that is actually not a key its the flip cover that would have protected the keyhole

Haha I'm glad i found the whole lock first then! It would have disappointing to have found a cover and thought it was a key thx man btw!

Nice find.
I found a couple brass corners to some sort of wooden box ( strong box) on a SSW fort site but never the lock.
Some time in the future I'd recommend sifting areas that had a concentration of finds that you've cleared of metal objects.
Sites like this usually have alot of kaolin pipes and musket flints.

Here is the lock post-electro. Check out the nice hole i put in it It didn't clean up as nicely as i'd hoped, but it doesn't have the angry red rust color and shouldn't deteriorate now.

It's still nice.
When I clean iron items that are a bit far gone like that.. I soak them in apple cider vinegar.
It will remove all the rust.
Then a quick bath in baking soda and water to neutralize the acid.
You will need to coat that with something to block oxygen to keep it from rusting further.

I put a type of carwax, recomended for after the electrolysis on it.

It's more than likely an iron ship spike.
I found it near a shipwreck metal detecting the beach.
I've found a few.
