I went back last night to the same place where I recently found (2) 1700s coins posted a few days ago...I couldn't keep away of course...had more great luck! This is an historical house where we have permission to search. Check out the great coin I dug last night, 1777 King George II -- best shape of any 1700s coin I've dug yet (look carefully you can see the three sevens below the line on the back, much easier in person). The back is great! Also dug this small buckle and went back this morning I got the small musketball. Couple of snakes came by to check us out and I got this good photo of one. Earthworks joined me this morning and had a great find, this large cent. We can't get a date off it, but it's a nice coin...last night after detecting I couldn't find my keys and my wife had to drive over with a spare key -- but I had a great excuse to go back this morning..."Honey, I have to go look for my keys!" -- never found them but that's ok. We have a new historic site for tomorrow that we've been trying to get permission for months and finally got the ok. Another guy who also got permission when we did, there's a board of directors that said ok, he was over there last week for the first time and already found one colonial coin, so we are fired up about the possibilities of this new site. Hopefully we have some good posts tomorrow night. (Thanks to Earthworks for photos) -- I encourage people to look for privately run historical sites and ask permission...you may think these are off limits, but we have had good luck.

Wow, those are some nice old coins. Way to go on "losing your keys" ;) You might have to go back there for months looking for them.

Nice! And cool picture of the snake!

The large cent found is a: Draped Bust Large Cent .(1796-1807)
Here is one for Example.
Earthworks...

checkmate,
The large cents are copper; not sure on King George but it gives my detector same tone as nickle.

Awesome finds and site! HH, Mike

Pretty cool coins! Keep up the good work.

Man it must be awesome to find coins like that!Really lucky to find barbers here,Great finds ......hh rh

Wow what a great site you have ,great finds also.

Nice going on the coins, however the date is most likely 1737, not 1777. If it were a 1777 KGII coin, than I know a few collectors who would like to see a better photograph of it for counterfeit study, but I am 99% sure what looks like a 7 is a 3.....I get the dates mixed up a lot of times, the 1 and 7 are similar, 3 and 5 and a 3 can be misconstrued as a 7.
The top of the 3 is similar to the top of the 7.

There were no King George II coppers minted in the 1770's and no King George III coppers with a 1777 date unless a counterfeit.

Hey Bergie!
Great story---great finds!

You may want to frisk that snake; he-she-it could be toting your keys! :)

Nice snake! I mean finds! lol

I had an colonial coin expert look at the photos and here is his reply:
"Hi Don,
Definitely a genuine Geo.II Young Head dated 1737. The erosion of the top layer of metal took out the bottoms of the numbers but I can still make out the remnants of the 3. Also, comparing the tops of the numbers that are left you can notice that the top of the 3 is different - thicker and longer - than the top of the sevens on either side of it."

So, it is a regal 1737 KGII dated 1737. Congrats on the oldie...

Don
