I went back to the millsite that previously yielded lots of old buttons and two 1796 Large Cents and one 1784 Counterfeit British Halfpenny.
I started hunting very close to the paved road and within a few minutes of starting the hunt this morning, I was rewarded with a nice old coin.

At first I thought is was a two cent piece but quickly felt the lettering on the edge of the coin and new I had one of the oldest Half Cents, since only the early year Liberty Cap Half Cents had Edge Lettering. This one reads TWO HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR around the edge of the coin, thus the early large cents were thicker than later ones.

The soil was not particularly kind, but it is not in too bad shape overall. I am really surprised on getting these four coins there and nothing in the 1800's.

You can see in the one photo how close to my truck and the paved road the location of where I found this half cent.

The photos are the site itself if you look hard it is showing the old road from the 1700's that went by the house and to the dam breast of the mill.
The second photo is off some wild blueberry bushes in the area, looking like a great year for the highbush blueberry in South Jersey.
The rest of the photos self-explanatory. :)

What no Chain Cents? ;D I told ya before your gettin' close. Gotta be more goodies there. Keep up the good work.........Rich

Awesome find and nice clean up job! I don't know that I would have hunted that spot so close to the road for fear of trash, nice call on the site. I think you find more pre 1800 coins than I do. HH, Mike

Great finds and great site...I'm sure there is a lot more in there.

Great, job, Don. That's a rush!

Is that a broken die or is it an old scratch. You obviously didn't put it there as the mark is the same color as the surrounding coin.

Dang that's nice...Sure wish we could find them down here!

Wowwwwwwwww What a find!!!!!!
That coin is awsome!

WTG,nice coin!

I am asked many times how I clean my finds, and it is posted on the cleaning and preservation forum.

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,39135.0.html

The third post down on it I detailed how I do the cleaning, the only different thing I have been doing lately is to coat the coin or button with wax, instead of Blue Ribbon (which I ran out of).

I do recommend, as I state in my instructions to try it out on other non-essential coins or artifacts first and of course this is for copper copper/brass like items, NOT SILVER...

:)
