I went back to the millsite that previously yielded lots of old buttons and two 1796 Large Cents and one 1784 Counterfeit British Halfpenny.
I started hunting very close to the paved road and within a few minutes of starting the hunt this morning, I was rewarded with a nice old coin.

At first I thought is was a two cent piece but quickly felt the lettering on the edge of the coin and new I had one of the oldest Half Cents, since only the early year Liberty Cap Half Cents had Edge Lettering. This one reads TWO HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR around the edge of the coin, thus the early large cents were thicker than later ones.

The soil was not particularly kind, but it is not in too bad shape overall. I am really surprised on getting these four coins there and nothing in the 1800's.

You can see in the one photo how close to my truck and the paved road the location of where I found this half cent.

The photos are the site itself if you look hard it is showing the old road from the 1700's that went by the house and to the dam breast of the mill.
The second photo is off some wild blueberry bushes in the area, looking like a great year for the highbush blueberry in South Jersey.
The rest of the photos self-explanatory. :)

That's a real nice one Don.

Your soil in your parts are really kind to the coppers. Your soil looks like it has sand in it. I love that type of soil. We find those conditions here to. But closer to the rivers and bodies of water.

I've tried your cleanng meathod and it works great, thanks for all your great advice. (and not googling ;))

What a coin! And nice to see wild blueberries, too. It brings back memories.
