My brother in law,(DigginitRTB), and I went to a cellar hole I had wanted to do all year. Finally got there for an hour and a half and found a couple of goodies. Found this 85th Regiment button about 15 mins into it. About 15 mins later DigginitRTB found the CFT. 8 Real. The button came out awesome. Found another posting where a guy in Clinton Ma. found 1 in worse shape. Did a little research and found out it should be from the War of 1812. The problem is the 85th was in the Baltimore, Washington, and New Orleans Campaigns during this time frame. Trying to find out if they were disembarked in Boston and made their way south to these battles through western Ma. Doesn't seem logical though. :icon_scratch: :dontknow: Pics are before and after cleaning. The 8 Reales is VERY tough to clean. I still have more work to do on that. Enjoy...............Hogge P.S. ----Looking for a value on the Regiment Button :laughing7:

Fantastic button, but my attention is focused on the reale. Are you sure it is silver? There were many counterfeits minted at the time.

Looks like lead.

It is lead. Kinda difficult getting the dirt off. Any suggestions?

I think that's as good as it gets. Get too aggressive and you will make a shiny mess of it. It's probably more the lead being brown than dirt, and that's why it won't come off. At least it's a nice solid coin because the pewter ones don't fair too well.

Never tried to clean lead before, try a little dilute drain cleaner ? short periods of time, check, repeat.

2 nice finds you guys made. whish my one coin, one button hunt today was half as nice.

Second though maybe this is best, you already can see the most of it, sometimes a fellow goes too far, and then says wish I had a quit a little sooner, hindsight 20/20 and all.

Those counterfeits are often worth more than the real deal! Nice!! :hello2:

Of equal condition I would say it is worth more, but still not very much money. I don't see a reverse S.

I see one on this guys site of the 68th, found near Yorktown, that sold for $175. It's about 1/2 way down the page. http://www.civilwarbuttons.com/infantry.htm

Maybe so, but $155 of that price is the history where it was dug. Just the button with no history would probably get $25. They're not rare, or maybe demand is a better word, and nothing that has little interest will hold a high value regardless of where it was dug. It's like saying I have some historical musket balls. Someone might pay you $20 for a few, but there won't be any lines to pay $100.
