My brother in law,(DigginitRTB), and I went to a cellar hole I had wanted to do all year. Finally got there for an hour and a half and found a couple of goodies. Found this 85th Regiment button about 15 mins into it. About 15 mins later DigginitRTB found the CFT. 8 Real. The button came out awesome. Found another posting where a guy in Clinton Ma. found 1 in worse shape. Did a little research and found out it should be from the War of 1812. The problem is the 85th was in the Baltimore, Washington, and New Orleans Campaigns during this time frame. Trying to find out if they were disembarked in Boston and made their way south to these battles through western Ma. Doesn't seem logical though. :icon_scratch: :dontknow: Pics are before and after cleaning. The 8 Reales is VERY tough to clean. I still have more work to do on that. Enjoy...............Hogge P.S. ----Looking for a value on the Regiment Button :laughing7:

That question came up in the other forum and was answered by the poster from research he did. Whether it's correct or not I do not know. :dontknow:

I don't have the right book on these & some of the British & French are similar in style, so I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure IP will put us right.

Re: 1796 CFT. 8 Real and British 85th Regiment Button in AWESOME SHAPE!

yep French, and better, because it's Rev War. ... 85th Saintonge Regiment. Raid on Lloyd's Neck, July 1781, Siege of Yorktown, VA, Sept.-Oct. 1781

Great day!

French buttons aren't really worth much compared to the American, Loyalist, or some British. Probably just $100 or so to the right collector.

I've never seen a single British military button with a turret shank so very obvious it's French. As far as I know it's only the Continental Navy and Marines that can be hard to tell if you dig a button like I did missing the shank! (The Americans copied the design from the French but I assume used a regular type shank on all of them)

Just a matter of opening a book 3 feet from me. A friend found a beautiful French 74th about 8 years ago. None for me though, except the Anchor one.

That explains why one was found farther east of me too. Did they move west and south, through Western Ma., from Boston to Lloyds Neck and Yorktown?

Found in some research on the regiment that they went from Boston to Providence to Yorktown. Then marched north back on that route later on in the campaign. Makes no mention of being in my area which is 100 miles to the west. Wonder how this one got here.

The book just says what I wrote along with the time frame they were in the Unites states. (May 2nd 1780 - June 1783) There's any number of reasons it could end up at your site and all will be complete speculation. One in the book was found in NJ. Not that it means much, just saying.

But it does make a little more sense now. Yes it sure would be interesting to know the story wouldn't it.

Lovely Rev Button :o
First CFT Spanish Dollar I've seen.
Great Finds!
Congrats & thanks for showing

sweet outing, Hogge.
both the button and the cft 8 reale held up really well.

You are not very likely to see any of those great finds surface in Tennessee. WTG Hogge & HH, Quindy.

Thats an amazing button with a tremendous amount of history....and the counterfeit 8 reale had to be an awesome experience for you brother...nice hunt all around!

Fantastic button, but my attention is focused on the reale. Are you sure it is silver? My guess is that one is a cast counterfeit.
