Hunted a field that many years ago was my prime hot spot for great conditioned coppers and relics. Over the years the finds petered out and have not hunted it for quite a few years, but decided to give the back section of the field another try.
I was rewarded with two small cuffsized buttons right away but nothing to speak of after that. When I looked at the button being posted, I thought it was a Jacksonian eagle button, that between my son and I we found two Jacksonian buttons in this same field back in the 90s, and one of them was the Eagle one. But, when I got home and put on my reading glasses, I saw all the writing and the differnet style of the button and knew than it was not a Jacksonian.
The backmark in Tice's book has it around 1837 but I sent the photos to him and he replied, Scovill used that backmark in the 1840s? and he thought it was most likely a Patriotic button, so that for now is what I will call it.
The button is TINY, only 14.4mm, smaller than a half dime, I am just amazed there is so much detail on such a small button. I have not cleaned the button, there is gilt but also areas where the gilt is worn off so I just might give it a light cleaning and be happy with that...
Got some more little Tombacs this morning and few early 1800 flatties, but nothing special, my son got a very worn down 1695-1701 William III copper, for perhaps his last hunt for awhile. Overall the first part of 2009 has been a good year for both of us..........
The photos are not too great for showing the gilt but it is there.
