Unusual shape, but looks like the is some legible copy there. I would be tempted to try to scrape off more of the crud, gentle scotch brite type pad or the side of a wooden skewer sometimes work for me. The zoom in halfway and take a close up moist or almost dry. My guess at this point is dog tag/dog tax license. Congrats That would be a very old one.

"Na" is sodium..my guess is a chemical tag of feed tag.

I cleaned it up a little. It says CS Dog No. 419 1869. Anyone know what this was for? Register a dog back in 1869?

if that's a dog tax tag, that's the oldest one I've ever seen posted and would no doubt be worth some fairly big cash to collectors

Nice old tag. We need to find out what CS stands for. Did you find it near Savannah? CITY of SAVANNAH? CS?

Here is what may be an 1800's Savannah dog tax tag. Photo is from an ebay listing, not terribly valuable but still a great find if it is in fact a dog tax tag.

Great find! That looks to be a very old dog tax tag and I think it could be quite valuable. You should email / or pm (he's a member here) Oddcoins. Here is a link -

eta here is a reference to a dog tax badge from Beaufort, SC in 1873. I think it is reasonable for Savannah to have implemented the same type of system a few years earlier than that.

Here is a thread from a couple years ago on another detecting site that refers to 2 other 1869 'City of Savannah' dog license tags:

tag dated 1884

Please keep us posted.

That's amazing. Great Find!!! I'd love to know what year was the introduction for those, or any, dog tax tags. Considering that newspaper article from 1873, a dollar seems pricy for back then.

Great link DCMatt! Seems Fredericksburg, Va., 1853 is the earliest.
