1865 Indian Head

I found a nice 1865 Two Cent piece at this 1800's cellarhole a few days ago but only had an hour to detect it the first time. This morning I gave it a proper working over and came up with another nice coin,an 1865 Indian Head.
It's the first IH I've dug for around 6 weeks so i was really happy to see it in the dirt. At the site I would have sworn it was a "no dater" as crusty as it looked but it cleaned up pretty nice.

Nice coin!  I guess you used the ammonia on that one too?

Kinda cool that you got a date pair of obselete type coins...wonder if there's an 1865 silver in there for ya...   (Or at least a 3c Nickel  )

Oh, and is that a hand trowel or lesche I see there?  In that scenery, go with the Army Shovel and give yourself a break.

Thanks Buckles,yes to the ammonia treatment and the treasure wise diggin trowel. I have a folding boy scout shovel that i use sometimes but i like to travel light sure would be nice to add a 65 silver to the mix,maybe tomorrow..kooking fwd to your post

I have never heard of the ammonia method. Do you use straight ammonia, a mixture and do you soak it for extended periods of time? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I haven't found a way to clean the indians that I have found.

Thanks Bob,your cleaning method has really worked great for me and i have passed that info on to a lot of t-netters.In fact,most every time i do a photo sequence cleaning of an old copper someone questions my cleaning technique.Thanks again for sharing.

I use straight ammonia and lots of q-tips. Practice on a wheatie or a non key date IH . This 65 IH was crusted pretty heavily and took a little more aggressive scrubbing than the 2 center i posted the other day. Be carefull not to rub too hard or the ammonia will take the green patina right off on to the q-tip

Good eye Mike! This is the old roadbed and the cellarhole sits just off to the left side.I took pictures of it but these old cellarholes i find just arent very photogenic
