1881 Gold coin money clip found

My best bud found this in the parking lot of a hardware store yesterday! He took it to a coin/jeweler and they paid him over $ 900 for it! being a decent guy, he notified the store of the find, to see if someone would claim it. No one did!The coin was welded to the clip on one side, so it was worthless as a coin, but the clip was gold too!

Was it an American Coin?
Maybe a Double Eagle? The weight of the Double Eagle and the Money Clip would probably bring the intrinsic value to about $1,400 to $1,500.
