Cleaning it will lessen its value. The coin is what it is. I'd leave it alone.

Wow, a '94O barber dime. Very nice, TC.
Was that a deep turf find or a demo lot/old home site find? How did it sound with your machine?

I never try to clean a key date coin, unless it is in very bad/oxidized shape to begin with. Yours looks to be in good shape, aside from the discoloration.

Congrats, buddy!

Don't do it yourself! A very nice find, and you'd hate to diminish its value by cleaning.

hey Texan

Wow Nice find, and the details looks great,

Cleaning, well some would argue that the value has already been decreased by the simple fact that it is a dug coin, and also by the discoloration.
That said I really don't know that to be true or false but I like nice looking coins and because I don't plan on selling any I clean them. Should you decide to clean it the only thing I would suggest you do is place a generouse amount of baking soda in your fingers add a few drops of water till it is a paste and very gently rub the coin between your fingers. ONLY if you really want a clean coin.

Nice coin ceep it up TnT.

before and after photo for you to see the results...

If your willing, I'd say let someone who knows how to clean coins, clean it. Dug coins have lost some value already, but you might do some serious damage, just my opinion!! Nice key date coin, no matter the condition!!

beautiful dime ! i dont think i'd clean it other then a water rinse, but it sure would be tempting

Nice coin TNT I really dont see where you diminished that 1887 coins Value any, I see where some of the ireversable damage (pit) showed itself. But lets face it I'd say mine at present is a G-4, could be polished into a vg-8, maybe a f-12 (doubting that though) Thats a 30 to 100 dollar Plus diffrence, but if I do nothing it will always be a G-4 even if I hit it with a hammer.
I think I'll try the baking soda method and post the clean up later. (not gonna try the Hammer ;D)

Oh sorry Captn it was found at the Bryan Street dig, Been under concret for likley 100 Plus years. I need to talk to you agien for some more Se pointers when you get a chance if you dont mind Thanks

Do NOT clean it with baking soda. The details on that coin are very nice. I would send it in to NCS a company owned by NGC and have them preserve it professionally. Tom

Let me know how it works for you,, yea the hammer thing only works on broken computers..he he...TnT

You can't polish a coin to a higher grade you are only lowering the value. Grade is determined by the amount of original detail remaining on the coin, you are only removing more by polishing. While the 1887 may look better to some, it is ruined from a collectors standpoint. Baking soda is very abrasive and should never be used to clean a coin. Please don't do this to a nice key date coin like your 1894 O!

I did the baking soda thing Took less than a minute, Of course I would have not done this with a Very High Dollar coin. But this one came out nice, the pit showed itself, and I dont believe a restorer could have made it any more valuble than it already is. And heres the pics, The back does look nice but the front is pretty far gone. I really dont belive I have diminished the still probaly G-4 condition and it would have never made it to Vg-8 and wasent financally worth sending off to be cleaned and graded.
Still worth $65.00, 07 redbook price, and alot prettier in my collection now.

Texan, that is one purdy dime you found there. . . a lot purdier than that ugly old Merc you found next to my car at the CTH :D

Take care,

Okay, here's what I don't understand: What does it matter if a coin is "dug" or has been setting in a box in the attic for 100 years? The value of the coin is in its condition, right? So even if it is dug, the value is still based on the condition (such as wear, scratches, discoloring). I agree that a dug coin is probably going to have a lower condition. But condition is condition...not dug or undug. Someone enlighten me.

BTW: It's a great find. I wish I had one.
