1898 Spanish war Prisoner Token Ida N. Gulick

Scanned a new spot today,
couple pounds of brass & copper fittings.
Then a 5C token! looks good!
anyone ever hear of 'N Gulick or I.N Gulick Posttrader'
found at the NH/ME border, 1" diameter.
Would love to learn more about this piece!

I think I see I.N. Gulick if my old eyes aren't playing tricks. Is that a dot after the I & the N ? Cool find. I have a token from Portsmouth in my collection from William Simes & Co. on one side and Nathanial March on the other side from 1837 but it was an Ebay find, not a dirt find.

Found this on ebay, maybe son/grandson? this name is not common.

I.N. Gulick was Mrs. Ida N. Gulick. She ran a Marine post where prisioners could obtain small stores at a fixed price. The Marine base was on Seavey's Island, Portsmith, New Hampshire.

A photo of the Naval Prison below. 'Pull or be damned Point' as mentioned in the book posted by Don, is just to the left of this structure.
Also Spanish War Veteran Medals found in area, Relics from this
Ill conceived and mostly forgotten War/conquest.

You really do have a piece of history. If that area has a museum, you may wish to consider donating the token along with a narrative and pics.

This token turned out to be a really great Piece of our local and national history ! I am sure any of the local meseums would treasure the token . I wonder if they were given to the prisioners for good behavior or for prison labor rates ?? I applaud you for saving this from the flats ! MaineRelic

From the link supplied by Don, I understand that a Spanish officer had his paymaster issue $35,000 for the comfort of the prisoners at the camp.
how it was distributed was not recorded, but it makes for a lot of 5C tokens!
A while back, I donated several dug artifacts, Musket balls, 3 ringers, 18th/19th century mackeral jigs, also a non dug 'NH Volunteer Militia' Coat button, and an Heirloom Brass Pin Commemorating of the storming of Ft William & Mary 1774 (the first overt act of the Revolution, & Paul Reveres First Ride, Great History here! http://www.nhssar.org/essays/FortConstitution.htm ) to the local Historic Society, and to a small museum at a nearby National Historic site.
For the moment I intend to hold this token, I am not finished thinking about it.
