Back in the cane fields today with Buckleboy and my son. Check out what my son found! http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,452882.0.html I dug another pewter button, two flat buttons , a .54 caliber round ball, a copper coin I have not identified yet and, ready???

A 1836 8 Reales!!! This is the 5th Spanish silver dug on this house site in four hunts!! The unidentified copper coin is 25 mm in diameter and I can read a date of 1719 or 1819, the tail of the 9 appears to go straight down, it's very thin. More on it later when I weigh it.

That is awesome. Is it just me or does it look like a counterfeit? IF so even more cool! :headbang:
I am not very well versed in determining this but Buckleboy seems to think it is a counterfeit.

I agree, after finding 4 counterfeit 8's myself, that one doesn't look right.
IP has taught me well, thanks IP.
Not sure if you saw this but here is a link IP posted on my last cft 8 reales find, check it out.

Congrats to you Shane on your spanish silver finds, your tearing those fields up.
Have you guys identified the copper coin yet? Get some close ups added to this post so we can see it better.

"Fantastic find, and the newest coin to come from this spot. The others were 1777, 1801, 1806, 1807, and 1819(?). "

Amazing guys. :icon_thumleft: That's the Field of Dreams you are on there.
Congrats on the 8 reale Shane, and also Anthony's 1/2 reale. Tell me BB didn't get skunked. :tongue3:
When he called it sounded like you guys were out there in a wind storm. :o
Fantasic job. Gumbo for everyone! :occasion14:

Shane,
The standard weight for your 8R is 27.07 grams. At that weight, the silver content should be .7859 oz.
Counterfeit coins can be of any weight, diameter, metallic composition or physical appearance (amount of perceived 'wear'); whatever the counterfeiter believes he can get away with.
Don.....

Great find, & right after your son found his first !!

Great find, even if it is a counterfit. Some one did a good job counterfeiting that on. As soon as I saw the pic, I thought I saw a little green peeking through here and there. I wonder if it was thown away when they realized it was counterfeit?

Yep. Handfull of piddly flat buttons and some clay pipe stems. Anything found I would've heard if I'd walked over it. Just didn't walk over it.

I'm saving up my mojo to dig a Pelican Plate. Much rather have that than another Spanish, although that Big 8 is really nice.

Very, very nice......congrats :icon_thumright:......yes, definitely appears counterfeit......I wouldn't have thrown it away if I figured out it was fake.....I would have at least tried my luck at the local saloon first........what are they gonna do, shoot me?..... :laughing7:
