1902:Buried Gold in Aruba : IN OUR PAGES:100, 75 AND 50 YEARS AGO

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao: Last November the Venezuelan Bank, of Caracas, shipped from La Guayra, on the Venezuelan schooner Arend, 10cases of currency, said to contain 112,000 bolivars, or about £4,666 insured with a Hamburg company, and consigned to the bank's agents in Maracaibo. On the voyage the master and crew sank the schooner near the coast of Aruba, landed the currency and buried the cases. They returned to Aruba and reported that the schooner had sprung a leak and foundered.

Sounds like they buried the money with intent to come back and dig it up.
