1916 Standing Liberty Quarter

I started the day checking out some parks in a nearby town with nothing promising showing up. Frustrated, I drove around town looking for another spot. I found a high school built in 1922 so I pulled on in. After digging a handful of clad, I pulled out my first and only silver of the day. I left the dirt on it till I got home, but could tell it was in rough condition. After a rinse I discovered that I had found my first standing liberty quarter. I was a hootin and a hollerin. As some of the excitement mellowed down, I decided to try to see if I could make out any of the date. At just the right angle I can make out the six as the last digit. So I looked it up to see how many possible dates it could be. The first one I check is the 1916 and discover that date has another telling feature that separates it from the others. It's the only date where there are no stars beneath the eagle on the back. I flipped over my coin and behold! No stars! So this coin is my first SLQ and first key date to boot! Thanks for looking!

Some 1917s have no stars. I actually have one at home. That is probably what it is since a 1916 is VERY RARE. But you never know

Your coin is a 1917 S mint (San Francisco) Variety I (no stars on the reverse under the eagle).
1,962,000 were minted though a rare find today.
The 'S' is still visible where it should be; whereas the '16 Variety I had no mint mark.

Of all the coins I've found, somehow the SLQ is just about my favorite. Don't find many but I do like 'em.

Nice one!

Oh thanks! I didn't know about the '17's. I guess my eyes are playing tricks on me with the six. You all are best! Thanks for setting me straight.

Nice slq! Those no date type 1 slqs can sure be fun! As a general rule the 1917 type one is much better struck/detailed than the 1916...and you can see how strong the rivets are on your coin, much stronger than a '16 in that grade would show

This may be a stupid question but how did you find out the date of the school?

Pardon my typos, I'm on a phone
