1921 PROOF "ZERBE" MORGAN Only 250 made! UPDATE: SENT TO ANACS

Found this 1921 proof or proof like morgan dollar today for 15 bucks. Coin dealer says it is uncleaned and unpolished and does certainly have the proof luster. I agree.

Thanks for the link. It is actually a "Zerb" proof. A circulation strike made specially to look proof-like. Several hundred issued, although exact amount not known. It should look "some what like a proof". Worth about 2 grand in PF60.

The Pics do not do it justice. I compared it to an MS-65 morgan dollar I have and it is clearly a proof. I asked everyone in my family to tell me which one was more proof like (they know very little about coins, except for the superb quality and mirror of a proof), they all pointed to the 1921 as a proof. I will try to get it graded at ANACS one day, anyone ever certified coins with them before? How was your experience? Thanks for looking!!!

Just sent the coin to ANACS today... my coin dealer said it is deffinately worth sending it in, he think there is a chance it is a proof!

Re: 1921 PROOF "ZERB" MORGAN Only 250 made!

Thanks everyone!

The dealer bought it in a bulk rolls of morgan dollars that an old Man brought in to sell. He was not a collector. The store just emptied the rolls and put em in a bin for 15-18 per coin.

Hopefully I can get it graded by ANACS some day soon.

HH!

Re: 1921 PROOF "ZERB" MORGAN Only 250 made!

I wish you all the luck....But dealers do not throw coins into bargin bins without knowing exactly what it is he/she is throwing in there. That would be like being a professional MD'er, Getting a $1400 detector as a gift and selling it for $20. Not going to happen LOL

I hope you prove me wrong though! :)

Either way, it looks like a great find CC, WTG!
I would get it certified just to verify exactly what you have there.

Thanks Bdoo!

I am planning on it, I am just worried that the grading company might keep it or something like that.

Just send it to one of the two major grading houses. They deal with thousands of coins worth millions of dollars every week. You'll get it back. May not like the grade but you'll get it back. I think the non-rush slabbing is about $25.

Zerbe proof, named for Farran Zerbe

You can't be serious in thinking that a reputable grading service would not return your coin. They would be out of business in no time. ANACS, PCGS... all have stellar reputations. I personally knew some of the ANACS guys before they moved the outfit to Texas, first rate people. All the shipping is by registered mail, which is insured and under lock and key the whole time the post office has it. If you do mail it, be sure to mail it registered mail, not just insured mail.

Second to clarify, I think you are talking about the "Zerbe" proof made for (former ANA President, I think, and famous numismatist) Farran Zerbe? Chances are really slim that's what you've got, but it is possible. It would have been a collector coin from day one, something someone paid a premium price for when new, not something that a collector would put in a roll with other dollars.

Will be super curious to see what the grading service has to say. You may want to show it to a few local dealers and get their opinion too. Always pays to befriend your local coin dealer and have a good relationship with him. Admittedly there are some bad apples out there, but there are a lot more honest dealers that bad ones.

Good luck! I hope you got a good 'un! ;D

Re: 1921 PROOF "ZERB" MORGAN Only 250 made!

Thanks both!

I aksed my coin dealer. The store has been open for over 40 years, its a large reputable coin store. I asked the owner what he thought and he said it is deffinately not cleaned or polish, but it does have a proof luster, especially around the lettering. This quallifies as the Zerbe proof (typo in title). Thanks for the feedback on the grading services. I have never done that before, I am more worried about the USPS loosing the package. Thats what happened with the last coins I sent in the mail. I will deffinately get insured though this time. Thanks again!

Not insured. Mail it registered mail with insurance as well as "Return Receipt Requested."
