I snuck out of work a few minutes early today to meet Ron to do some detecting! We met up at a location that I had not hunted before. In this one strip of grass Ron started at one end and I started at the other end. After a while of detecting we both had found silver coins ~ then we switched ends ~ Ron yells down to me "You missed one!", so I walk over to where he's swing his Explorer SE, he hasn't started digging yet, he's got a nice signal right in the middle of a plug that I dug ~ so I run my XLT back over the area ~ sure enough, there's a solid quarter signal, DANG! I must have found something and didn't re-check the hole. So I walk away while he digs it . . . . . . then he yells, "SILVER QUARTER!", "and it's a BARBER!". Now, I can't write here exactly what I said, but it was something like "$h!t"!! It was a 1912 Barber Quarter! I'M SO STUPID!!! Oh well, I'm glad Ron found it! The funny thing is is that I've never dug a Barber 25c yet ~ I've found a dozen Barber Dimes, but no Barber quarters! So, that's the one that got away from me! Here's what I dug today:

2 clad quarters
10 clad dimes
3 nickels
32 Memorial cents
1 Oriental foreign coin
13 Wheat cents ~ '18, '27-S, '34, '39-D, '42-S, '45, '45-S, '45-S, '47-S, '48-S, '48-S, '53-S, '55-D
1945-S Mercury Dime
1942-S Washington Quarter
and a cute little key

Oh No, Neil!!! :crybaby2:

You let your 1st Barber Quarter slip away from you. :BangHead: I can't tell you how many times I've recovered silvers/wheats from other md'ers previously dug plugs. A lot of times, I will check my plug after retrieving a coin, and don't hear anything with my probe, so I cover the plug and run my coil over it only to hear another deepie just an inch or two off the original.

I think losing that one will make that 1st Barber quarter you find someday even more special.

Nice finds by the way. You seem to be scoring silver everytime out.

Sounds like you had an awesome day to me! Make sure your boss doesn't know that you snuck out of work for metal detecting! Even though Metal detecting is the best hobby in the world! :)

Yeah, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry! Hopefully my first Barber will be a pre-1900 Key date! 1896-S maybe?! LOL

:sad11: OHHH! That's a hard lesson remembered. :P But on the bright side, :icon_sunny: at least one of ya found it.

You'll find one soon! Congrats on all those other finds!

Nana :)

Good stuff OC. Silver is popping out for you

Tell you what, I'll trade one of the several Barber quarters I've found for one of the GOLD COINS (I think I have the right guy) you've found :D! Trust me, a Barber will come.

Hey OC

That is a beautiful mercury dime.

Well, at least you got some silver. And a silver Quarter too. Those Barber Quarters are tough. I get lucky enough to find about 1 a year.

Nice hunt and finds ... it was definitely a good day but that Barber Quarter that got away would have made it an awesome day!!! Chalk one up to experience ~ Jimmy

Nice hunt! To bad about the barber Quarter.

Neil,

OW OW OW OW OW!!!!!!!

Oh, that's gotta hurt.

Thanks for telling the story, though.

Always pulling for you,

Mike

There are benefits to going by yourself you never know exactly what you miss but having Ron there to show you will and can be for sure the hole will be checked good from now on. great story, I think I can go soon the snow is finally going away slow but sure . Kip

What you did find is still a good dig. I do know all to well of what you experienced. A friend and I were hunting and old farm that the owner gave us permission since he is no longer farming it. I use an XLT also and as fate would have it, he uses an Explorer SE. I had just finished a row and moved off to another patch of this field. He came from behind the barn and started down the same plow line I had walked away from not more than an hour before. As my luck would play out, he found an 1875 seated quarter not more than 3in from my recovery spot. I had found a 1926 merc. there and didn't realized that some of the tone ID was telling me there was more than one signal and did recheck before I moved on. I am still really new at all this as I just started back in Jan. detecting. I have yet to break beyond the 1900's. Mistakes will make you say "some things" but can be very valuable learning tools. thanks for sharing. Good luck in your next hunts.
