Gang,

I finally get the chance to write what I am always reading about.

I am new to Mding and have been learning with my Prism V for a couple weeks but have done poorly, even at Cocoa Beach. There is a spot I knew of in NC that holds a bunch of coins because I have lost them there myself, so it was a sure thing. In an hour and a few minutes I found:
15 Quarters
25 Dimes
9 Nickels
17 Pennies

There is no numismatic value, but it’s my first big take, and best rookie day. Man I am jazzed you guys, and getting better at pinpointing.

1 Spot 1 Hour 66 Coins...

I can't wait to find some jewelry, relics, etc. My trash log is interesting: 2x.50 call Balls (modern) Metal Jacket from military round, 2 keys, heroin spoon, fishing weight, 2 bobby pins, small piece of copper tubing, and a jillion pull tabs. I have only been at it for a month but yesterday was a confidence builder for me. This site motivated me to enter this adventure. Most everybody is cool and helpful. I have to assume North Carolina is a hot spot for caches so I have been reconning for some search areas. Any tips on search techniques?

Best caches were plced in areas FAR away from banks. Check the old farm properties. Post holes in fencelines, the four corners of the foundation, old cellar holes, basements, treelines, etc.

Keep digging around this forum, lots of valuable info from knowledgable folks!

Looks like you are learning that machine pretty well. Cool finds, keep em coming!

Jeffro

Thanks for the tips

Im from NV but now in NC I usually visit my hometown 2-3 times a year. Maybe we could do a hunt together?

Hello Coda and welcome. You are on a roll and it just gets better. The biggest lesson I learned since starting just over a month ago is learn the machine and trust what it is saying to you. I have an M6 and when it says a quarter, I don't argue. Hasn't let me done yet. When you start picking up the jewlery enjoy the RUSH.

You got almost $7 in clad in an hour that is something special! :) Might actually end up being your best clad hour till you hit a major coin spill! Averaging $7 a day in clad would pay your detector off pretty quick! Hope your next hunt is half as good in an hour and you will be happy! ;)

Re: 1S1H66C's

Coda,
Now that your getting used to your detector toss some coins on the ground and put your coil over them to see where your pinpoint area might be. Other than that just keep at it you'll only find things if they are there in the first place. I've found the banks between the ground and water at boat ramps are a pretty productive area to hunt. But the main thing is to find just about any area and get the detector swinging. If you have a bad day or bad area during a hunt trust your own judgement and move on to another area. I'm glad you went back to where you had lost your coins and checked that area out. Now you know you and the detector can find things as long as they are there to be found. I think you'll find alot of pull tabs and trash as you start out and even afterward but you'll get the feel of the detector and get better as time goes on as to what might sound like a good solid target and what might be trash. There are times when I'm lucky to find a newer rusty penny if anything and then there are days like you just had where it seems you're popping out more coins then the US Mint. Keep in mind there are other goodies in the ground out there with your name on it. I can't wait until you find your first lost gold or silver ring and your first silver and your first old coin. Keep at it and it will come to you. Getting there is frustrating especially at first but later you'll learn to enjoy a good area and a good day even if you don't make an amazing discovery. The major thing is to not get discouraged in the begining.
