Well I'm new to the forums and new to metal detecting. I just bought a new Tesoro Compadre . I thought it would be a good metal detector to start out with.

I have always wanted to get a metal detector just to get out and look for cool artifacts but i also wanted to get on because when i was about 8 years old i was playing outside my grandmas house and had one of her rings on and lost it. the whole family looked for it and never found it. Needless to say Ive kinda felt bad about that eversince then. The ring was given to her by my Dad who had it made for her in Thailand when he was there in the military. So it was one of those things that you just couldn't replace.

Well last Saturday i decide that i was going to go try to look for it. I took my little girl along with me . We got to my grandmas and i broke out the detector and started trying to figure out how to set it cause i really wasn't sure. After acouple of Min's i figured it out and away i went. Since i wasn't really sure what to set it on i got acouple of hits that didn't really sound like much but i dug them anyway and just found some scrap metal. I keep on walking and got a really solid hit we i started digging and when i brought up my shovel to check it out a small ball of dirt rolled out and i could make out a jewel on the top of it. My little girl let out a scream omg i cant believe you found it . i wiped off the dirt and there it was. After almost 20 years i had found what i lost as a little boy outside playing baseball.

We took the ring over to my dads house to clean it off. He couldn't believe that i had found it . Well we cleaned it up the best i could and off to see my grandma i went . I sat down and just kinda chated with her and then told her i had something for her and to close her eyes and hold out her hand. When she opened her eyes and saw the ring i thought she was gonna cry. At first she thought i went out and had another one made for her but then realize that it was her ring. She was so happy to have it back. We sat and talked for alittle while longer all the time she was looking at her ring . She just couldn't believe that after all those years i found her ring and brought it back to her.

Well thanks for listening to my story if anyone has any info for a newbie i will take any that you can give.
Also if there is anyone that lives around central Arkansas and know some good places to MD let me know
Thanks

Nice story. It is great that you were able to find the ring and return it to your grandma. I bet you really made her day. Your find will be hard for you to top in the future.

Sounds like you got the character and passion to be a good treasure hunter! You did awesome thing there for your g-ma. As far as learning goes, you just need to spend some time digging in your local parks and stuff for a little while until you get used to how the machine reacts to different targets. Once you get familiar with your machine and feel confident that you understand it then start looking for the older sites. If theres and older area in your town then go knocking on a few doors of the older, more run down looking ones seeing if you can get permission to detect in there yards. Make sure that its not a nicely manicured yard because most likely you will get a NO!!
There will most definitely be a few no's anyway but that is just a part of it. If your not comfortable with knocking on doors then start by looking up the older parks and older swimming holes etc. Anywhere there was foot traffic in the past will be good places to start. Good luck and keep us posted on your next big find. 8)

Welcome to TNet! Congratulations! Great story and a beautiful ring!

Now that is an inspiring story.

Congratulations to you--and thank you SO much for sharing this. Few great finds are made this easily, but I'm glad that this great and Important find wasn't a grueling one for you.

I have returned rings and lost items to people who have cried uncontrollably in front of me--it's those experiences that give me faith in what I do--of the power of our hobby to do Good to people.

Best Wishes in your future metal detecting adventures,
