Had a few hours to hunt yesterday so I went back to the park where I found my 1st barber two weeks ago. My first find was deep (10+ inches) and I'm having a hard time identifying it. I think it's brass as it rang up like a wheat and it has some decorative rings around the edging. If anyone can give me an i.d. I'd appreciate it. After that I spent the next few hours digging copper pennies (no wheats) and a lot of trash. I was working my way around what had to be one of the largest trees in the park when I got a 12-43/44 hit. I couldn't believe it when I flipped out a silver dime! Even better I could make out a wreath on the back! I know I'm lucky when in two weeks a manage to find two barbers at the same heavily hunted park! I think just the massive area to cover alone has helped my odds at finding some leftover silver as well. Anyway, I flip over the dime and my heart drops as I can tell through the dirt that I've scuffed it up some (of course it had to be the barber!). I try to avoid thinking about the damage I've done and admire what looks to be a very nice 1907 D barber dime! :hello2: Not 15 minutes later between two trees (trees have become my best friend) I get a perfect 12-45. I felt confident it was silver but still couldn't help but stop and stare when I saw silver in the bottom of the hole. A nice '61 rosie. That's the most silver I've found in a days hunt and brings my 2013 total to a whopping 4 silvers!:tongue3: That's alright though, I'll take quality over quantity any day, besides I plan on finding a lot more by the years end! Lastly I found this interesting little 'Good Housekeeping' lid and wasn't sure how old it was so I thought I'd post a pic and let you tell me what you know. Oh, and one little but important question. I know you don't rub the dirt off silver but does it hurt after you've washed the dirt off to use a little baking soda to remove the remaining clingy dirt. I don't plan on selling my coins but I still don't want to detract their value. Also if you know of the best quality affordable coin protectors I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for looking and for your comments and HH!

Thanks, the condition makes me think it had to be lost around that year which is pretty cool.

Very nice Barber dime! That's got some really good detail!

Your first item looks like a very old rein guide for a horse and carriage if I were to guess. Yes, baking soda will detract from the value of the coin considerably--just use distilled water and mild dish soap if you want to keep the value intact. I like the Whitman plastic 2x2 coin holders...more expensive than paper, but they present the coin well. They are cheaper if you buy them by the box. There are many sources if you Google them.

The rein guide's and interesting idea and would be pretty cool if thats what it turned out to be. I'll have to stop using baking soda. The Whitman's look pretty nice. Thanks for all the info!
