Re: "1t----B ARTILLERY No. 53 What is this?

What's the size? Looks as if it might be an early Militia cap plate. I have seen one or two crescent-shaped plates, maybe 4-6" wide, attributed to c. 1800-15 Vermont Militia units.

3" long by 3/4"-7/8" at it's widest point.

The first digit is actually a "1". I was thinking "1st" Battery? Then again....it could possibly be an "L". Tough to say the way they made letters and numbers back in the day. That's why I need help with someone knowledgable in this area. Thanks

Okay... got it, thanks to George Weller Juno, a professional militaria appraiser who serves as a consultant to Western & Eastern Treasures.

It's a Revolutionary War, British cartridge box sling belt tip. You can see a pair of them on cartridge box #54, p. 80, of Neumann & Kravic's Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution.

Congratulations on recovering this rare and valuable relic!

P.S. Hogge, check your messages!

WOW!! What an awesome find. There is nothing I love more than Revolutionary War Relics. This is definitely a BANNER find in my opinion! One of my favorite finds I've seen on TNET. AMAZING!!

Re: "1t----B ARTILLERY No. 53 What is this?

My BANNER vote is in!

Re: "1t----B ARTILLERY No. 53 What is this?

This one is most CERTAINLY banner material--and I don't say that very often!

Nice work!

Wow, I knew I wanted to look for that in the book and just did not get around to it! BANNER find for sure. Love it, another great piece of History recovered that would have otherwise been left in the ground forever! WTG!!

I'm revising my own quote. After thinking......this IS my all time favorite find I've seen on TNET up to this point. I am a huge fan of Revolutionary War relics and this one is AWESOME! There is no doubting it's identification. Museum quality artifact!

Great find Hodge! I'd be on cloud nine and showing it off for a month, maybe better. Keep digging!

Re: "1t----B ARTILLERY No. 53 What is this?

If this were posted in Todays Finds or My Best Finds, it is almost a lock for the BANNER. Might want to think about posting it over there now that you know what it is for sure. It will get a lot more exposure. I'm sure there are a lot of people who don't often check the What's it forum who would love to see it.

I agree. And I'll then make my Banner Vote again on a new thread. :)
