I really can't give an opinion as to whether it is plated or a Zinc Planchet that never got the Copper Plating or the Copper Plating was removed by acid. To even attempt to determine any of the above, one really needs the coin in hand to do so but even then, the analysis can be uncertain.

It's too shiny to be zinc without the plating. Just like the 1943 cents the should be a dull finish. The plated ones are shiny. This coin has been plated by someone outside the mint.

You can even see the copper showing through on the reverse.

Yes. Its very shiny almost like a new dime or quarter. The after mint plating sounds most likely.
Thanks for the responses.

Everybody has covered it pretty well, so no new info here, but thought you might find this interesting... I'm a chemistry teacher and we do this lab every year at some point. If you zinc plate it and then heat it, you end up with a brass coating as explained in that link posted above.

a chem teacher eh? tell me, years and years ago, my chem teacher told us how she would "polish" silver by adding some of this and doing some of that...to reverse the oxidation.... no polishing needed....can you refresh my memory?

Baking soda and aluminum foil mixed in water until the baking soda dissolves.... it removes the black silver sulfide tarnish pretty quickly. just dip the silver in!
