First barley is cut here and fields are grubbed. Went out today to look if one of our roman sites is ready to hunt. We found only one, but one with good finds in the past. I wasn't disappointed today. It's a low trash field because it's detected since years. We spent 5hrs detecting, the farmer drove by checking who's on his field, he waved and wished good luck. :hello:
4 roman coins turned up with one silver. I absolute love this Denarius because of the history behind. Augustus was the first roman emperor. Roman Republic ended with his father Julius Caesar. He lived around the time of Christ's birth, was named in the Bible, gave the month August his name and the find was made almost exact 2001 years after his death in august 14 ad.

Roman Empire 2 b.C. - 4 a.D.
Obverse: CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE. Laureate head at right.
Reverse: (AVGV)STI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT, C L CAESARES below, Gaius and Lucius standing front, each with a hand resting on a round shield and a spear; in field above, a lituus right and simpulum left.

A better Follis of Constantinus turned up also. Trier mint 316 ad. Another great find was an Amphora handle frag with 2" diameter, making it the biggest handle i've ever found. Must been a huge thing!

Nice hunt and finds Westfront !

The Augustus silver is a Fantastic recovery ...................:occasion14:

Absolutely wonderful coin! I'm gonna keep my eyes peeled for one of my own..... Here.... In....the parks....in Ohio...

Congrats on the Denarius, it's a beauty!

Nice finds for sure. Can you please describe the other items that you have pictured? Looks like some old coins and nice relics most of which we never find here so it'd be interesting to learn something. Thanks.

Hi Erik, third pic is lead and roman square nails,
4th musket balls with the rifled ones Prussian except the small on top, probably for hunting purposes,
5th a worked (hammered) sheet of bronze, part of a decorated crotal bell, small bronze pin and roman belt mount
6th Belt hook, i guess Prussian and a German WWII coat button
7th Roman pottery with the amphora handle, blue pottery and decorated Samian pottery
8th Prussian 19th C. coins and two 1940s zinc coins

Looks like you had a good start to the season. A nice denarius on the first day is a good omen of things to come. The Constantine coins always seem to hold up well in the ground compared to other bronzes, I have a very similar Trier mint coin of Constantine in similar condition.
good luck for the rest of the season.
George.

Thanks, i hope this season will be a good one! You're right, looks like Constantine used better bronze than other emperors... :dontknow:

Our Barley was coming in last week but got stopped by rain, we are checking on it again today, fingers crossed.

That is a nice early one & not the run of the mill issue, very nice first day!

Yes, i happy with that first day! We had a good soaking rain in the night and signals were clear and loud. That surely helped on that hunted site. Looking forward to see what you got today!

Westfront, awesome finds

I would hunt 500 hours for a 10% chance of finding that!

That's the kind of thing you dig up and it gets the heart pumping with how amazing the history behind it is. That is a great find!

It is, but most of the time i have my glasses not with me so the heart starts pumping later at home! :laughing9:

One of the coolest finds I've seen on this forum! Wow that is amazing. Banner for sure in my eyes and just an amazing piece of history. I'm blown away

Genius minds think alike! I'm glad someone else thinks this is banner material. I too think this is one of the best coins I've seen on here.

Banner banner banner baby!!!
