Wow 23 old buttons would be a great day in anybodys book. They look to be in very good shape as well.
Congratulations on your finds

Thanks, I spent most of the evening cleaning them up. I found five yesterday so I went back this morning and placed my detector on relic mode and found another 23. I found two with an eagle on top of a cannon they look really old.

I'd kill for a 23 button day. That's pretty awesome. What kind of place did you find them?

What an awesome button day

I found them on the side of a hill in a field. The soil was sand on top of the hill but was red clay as I got towards the bottom of the hill.

Just amazing site you have found! I'll be honest to say, sites like that, will produce relics for years.
Congratulations

I dont know why you guys down there ever go home :icon_scratch: :icon_thumleft:

All of the buttons pictured are SWEET!

I don't see the Louisiana buttons listed as CW or pre CW in the Albert or Tice books. My guess is post CW but I am not that familiar with buttons from The South. They look like one piece buttons in the picture.

The US button is a "Great Coat" button (1820's to 1840) and it is a truly great find!

Lets see some more closeup pictures and I will put in my vote for a banner!

Fantastic buttons! I'm not a button expert...but I believe that they are pre-Civil War based on their shape and overall appearance. I'm thinking that they might be early Louisiana Militia, but that's just a guess. The next time that you have an early American / Civil War show near you, I'd take them for an evaluation. You'll find many button experts at these shows, and you'll most likely find that your buttons are valuable. I envy your good fortune.

It's not how many you dig, it's what they are! I'd rather one incredible button than 5,000 plain ones.

Your 23 worked out well.

I would like to see more close ups, but from what what I can see it looks like you are on an 1820s - 1830s US military site from when Mexico controlled Texas and the US had a military presence in Louisiana to protect the borders. I have friends in Dallas that have hunted some of these sites in Louisiana and found lots of early US buttons, some as early as right after the Louisiana Purchase.

You are really fortunate to be hunting a site like that!

That site has some great potential. :icon_thumleft: I would hunt it hard. Louisiana is known to produce Colonial relics, so you never know when digging a target. :icon_thumleft:

Looks like some nice buttons...lets see close ups.

Steve in Pa has it right. Great looking 1820's militia buttons. I would bet there are more there too. Hit is hard.

That pelican button could be worth some $ !They are all nice & old relics
