Not too often when I find a coin almost 200 years old anymore!

Same. I never use water on coppers.
Gently wipe off loose dirt when out of ground.
Andre and wax after they dry. Generally, the drier the better.

I know of Andres. But I've never seen/used them. Aren't they just pointed abrasives?

Yes.
Of varying degrees, and providing precise control compared to other abrasives, like finger nails, pant legs, brushes, toothpicks, etc...

Knew a guy who put rough condition Indian head cents that were ready to crumble into olive oi They may still be soaking.
I tried electrolysis on a flaking one. Looks like rough sandstone today.

That's been my experience with some coppers too. I can pretty well tell which ones might clean up a bit. But....water? Just never seemed to work for me.
