I did a bit better today with my new Ace 250. Some coins of course.
And then I got a beep on a quarter about 2" deep. Too my surprise when I found the
source of the beep it was a Gold and Diamond earring. OK! I'm sure if it's gold (probably not)
and if where a real diamond I would still be out in the field looking for more.
How can you tell if you have a good find or not? Is all gold marked in some way? And
what about the stone? How can you tell what you have?

Great finds! You are doing great!

I think most of the gold jewelry have some kind of markings on them, but it's not impossible to find some unmarked.

And I wouldn't worry too much if my finds are real or not, it's all about the thrill of finding things, and if something is real then I consider that as a bonus. Anyways, almost anything beats a pulltab :D

That's a cool earring!
Usually gold is marked but not always.
Best thing to do is tell yourself it's real gold and go find some more. :)

Nice digs fellow ACE'r, earrings can be marked really small, even on the post. Bongo

Congratulations on your finds! You have done very well for your 2nd time out.

Look carefully with a magnifying glass or a jeweler's loop around the area of the stud and around the edges or back for any markings (on a chain, check around the clasp). Usually gold will say how many karats it is or if it is from Europe, it may give a numerical content value such as ".750" which means 18k gold (Pure gold is 24k, 24 x .750 = 18). If you find that the gold is real, there is a really good chance that the jewels will be valuable/real. There are also inexpensive test kits which you can buy that you can scratch your gold object onto a small stone and then pour a few different drops of liquid (one at a time) and if it removes the scratched mark it tells you if it is real and how many karats it is.

Chalk another nice find up to the ACE 250!
