Greetings...
found my second silver coin yesterday after purchasing my detector in May....pretty good shape from what i know. Any "ballpark" guesses on what it could grade out? Any idea on value (trying to rationalize to the wife that the detector was a good "investment" .. lol) I was excited and wanted to share my excitement with people who appreciate it!! Great forum

HOLY SMOKES!

she's beautiful, the detail on the eagle feathers, and maybe even detail of her "bossom" (did they mint those sort of things in 1874?) Lemme guess that guy worked at the coin press, then brought one home (via horse and carraige) then gently burried it in the sand???

That's awsome....good on ya!

WOW BEAUTIFUL COIN

I tried to post a reply to your question about old home sites but I have no idea where it went ??? ???
So here goes again, I hope it doesn't post twice.

Old home sites can be tricky and down right aggravating. I hunt civil war relics and I have a method that works for me. It may not work for you or anyone else. I use a Whites XLT so you might have to change the program language to match your machine. If I have unlimited access to the property then I will make my first pass through in coin only mode with the bottle cap reject turned up. Then I dig only the strong signals. This lets me know what type metal and what time frame relics I'm dealing with. I have found some real nice coins, buckles and plates that were right next to or mixed in with trash. Then on my second trip I will change to the coin and jewelry mode and dig only the strong signals. If I feel like there is still something there I will change to the relic mode and go over the property again. I know that this sounds like a lot of work, but it seems to work better for me than going through and digging every iffy sounding signal. Anyway just my 2 cents worth

Geez, does it need to be cleaned??!!??.....Leave it exactly as is.....sweet start to your detecting career.....my third ever coin 7 years ago was a 1904 Barber half in XF.....I know the feeling and hope it keeps up.....in my case I went 19 more months before another half..... just keep enjoying this great hobby of ours.....great job!

Relic, not crazy, I do the same thing but coins the first 2 times and coin/jewelry all the next times....I don't mess with the relic....just me....good advice for us White's guys.....I have a 200K mile XLT (still runs good, no leaks, not blowing any smoke yet... ;D and a new DFX)

HH all!

I'm glad I was sitting down when I saw that--you've got yourself a staggeringly nice find!

Don't clean it--and quickly get it into one of those little hard-plastic coin holders.

all I have to say, its beautiful, puts mine to shame

First it don't need cleaning. I would give you more money for it right now!!!!!!!
and I would know if you cleaned it or not.If you must clean it for some reason, then use very mild!!!!!Soap.
I scrub my bath tube every week because of soap.

If you want to sell it I would give you 200.00 for it,in XF condition.

That's one of the best I have ever seen,
congrats big time, keep it going.
I think you are getting spoiled...lol

Smiles!

Thanks for all the comments and feedback. I was also suprised on the detail this thing has - I think the look on my face would have been something to see, needless to say i was shocked. Thanks to what i've read on here, I didn't do a thing to it other than run under water for a min and blotted it with a towel. Without the information posted on here, I would have polished it before i even got home..thanks for educating me on how to handle coins.

I found it on our propery which has been in our family for over 130 years which is about the same age as the coin ironically enough.

No, not interested in selling it for any price - something to pass on to my kids - but i was curious on approx value just for my own information.

Thanks again and yes, I think i am totally spoiled...called beginners luck i think..lol

Wow, that is one heck of a find. Nice job! :)

Great story behind the coin! More luck on your seach!!!

As far as clean or dont clean, here is what I would suggest. If you have not already done so, rinse with water and dab dry. No more. As that is a much better coin than most that are found, put it in a 2 X 2 to help protect it. Later on if you find a safe method of further cleaning it, go for it. You can always clean it further later, you can't clean it further now then unclean it later.
