300 Million - 1940’s... last week

Hit a few spots in the park woods last week. Trying to get in a couple more hunts before the briars, poison ivy and mosquitoes get bad.

First spot was a coal mining stop on a now defunct set of RR tracks. Lots of 19-23 signals with these miners tags. The most I have found in one hunt.



Found this near the tags, about the size of an extra large chicken egg, thinking wild turkey, mostly off white with some speckles.



Here is the roundness.



The 1865 IHP has some nice details.



The Allegheny County Police must have used some “strong arm tactics” back in the day.



Here is the handful of miscellaneous finds.



The piece in the upper right was iD’d as a 300 million year old fossil, found in a stream bed.



I believe the spoon collar/ring is silver, but can’t make out the mark.



And the piece in the center bottom is a smashed ring, seems to be lead, from the China-Burma-India theater of WW2.



You never know what you will find...

Oh, and some glass surface finds, Billy Baxter sassafras soda early 1900’s.



And some horse tack that sounded like big silvers...

Coal Miner's Tags are really cool - I've found around (10) of them myself - they cleanup real nice.

Those tags and Indians are a great score a merc nice to get in there before squeeters come thats for sure I wish my hunts looked half as good.

I can't make it out either. Living where we do, it's natural to think this is either Allegheny County or Allegheny City (current North Side). But I came across this which shows it as Allegheny, NY Police. Then again they may just be guessing....

Interesting. Allegheny County Police in PA is a fairly modern unit, formed in 1932 to police the airport and parks. Allegheny City was formed in the late 1700’s as the North Side of current Pittsburgh. It was finally absorbed into Pittsburgh in 1907. There is an Allegheny County NY, but I don’t see a Allegheny town. Your screen capture shows my button ID’d as Allegheny NY.

This type of button looks and feels like the standard CW coat button, later 1800’s.

Bit of a mystery, but the logo is cool!
