Do real diamonds ever lose their luster, if in the ground for 100 or 150 years for example? Late today I found a brooch on a dirt road leading up to a wealthy estate from the 1800s. It has 32 "diamonds" some look nice and shiny and others dull. I figure if fake ones get dull, how come some are still very shiny. Wouldn't they all be dull? It was an exciting find. I am literally rushing to get ready for New Year's so I will get a photo of it as soon as possible. There are 8 larger 'diamonds' about 1/2 carat and 24 of the 1/4 carat size. It's shaped like a fishing lure and about the same size. (The metal holding it is not a precious. Can't tell what it is.) Update--I cleaned it with jewelery cleaner and several more of the diamonds look more shiny. Some look fantastic. Some look dull yellow. Could it be they are real and some are just worse quality than others?

Don't I repeat Don't use it to go fishing.lol
Sounds like the diamonds are real dirty, thus dull. A pic would be nice.

that's a cool find! i would guess if the base metal is not gold or silver the likelihood of the diamonds being real would probably go way down, but a jeweler or a diamond tester could tell you for sure. lets hope they are real! keep your fingers crossed!
