Hi everyone,
Didn’t intend to hit a new personal record, it was an accident, HONEST!
I’ve been trying to get my lawnmower running, but it is giving me fits. I’ve bought new belts and very carefully put the thing back together. It has two blades and they keep hitting for some reason. I thought it might be the belt was slipping allowing one of the pulleys to spin faster than the other so I bought a new belt. Same thing! So, I decided that Wednesday I would go to a neighboring city and metal detect for the day and forget about the $%@#%& lawnmower.
I hit the road just before 9 a.m. The city is about 40 miles away. This would be my third trip to this city. My wife accompanied me on the second trip there. I had planned to hit a certain school that on my previous trip was locked up tight. I figured that was because school was still in session as last summer it wasn’t locked up. Well, its summer…so why is there still a chain on the gate? Oh well, I probably only wasted a quart of gas on the side trip to find that out.
So, I hit Mickey D’s for a sausage biscuit to enjoy with my coffee…gag, gag. Drove to the locked up school, saw the chain & drove on to the next school. Didn’t find too much so I hit a boat launch tot lot on the way back to the highway. Not too much there either. The day wasn’t starting out so great!
The third tot lot wasn’t all that great either. A wire ring and only 18 coins. The fourth tot lot is in a city park. Found a small junk ring with a white stone and a couple pendants as well as 99 coins (81 of which were pennies). I worked slowly at this park as I was waiting for the twenty something’s to get done playing volleyball. When I pulled the last penny from the sand I decided that they were there for the duration so I split with the thought in the back of my mind to return later…but that didn’t happen either.
On to the next school tot lot. Quite a few trinkets and a Sacagawea dollar coin, 7 quarters, 7 dimes, 5 nickels and 13 pennies. On to the next park tot lot. Very little there but did manage a 1956 wheat penny.
By now it was close to three o’clock and I was getting a bit hungry. Went to Burger King & got a little ticked when the prices were 30 cents higher than what I was used to paying and no dollar menu! So, I didn’t get my usual double cheeseburger meal and settled for a whopper Jr. meal. Not nearly as satisfying or filling. It is getting so there are no cheap places to eat anymore…I just may pack a lunch!
The next school was in a not too great neighborhood and I was constantly looking over my shoulder. The tot lot was in terrible condition, the wood chips a bit hard and I anticipated scant finds. Oh well, I’ve been wrong before. In addition to 88 coins and various trinkets I managed to pull out a small .925 silver heart.
Anyway, on to the next tot lot. Not too shabby…55 coins (including a 1925S wheatie) and a little Madonna trinket which I managed to break the post off of it when I tried to straighten it out.
Another tot lot at a Community Center where the findings were meager at best. It was dirty and junky and became crowded with a bunch of rowdy teenagers. OK, you talked me into it…I headed towards home.
My back was hurting pretty bad by then anyway. Stopped at the Thief’s station & filled up my car as the gas was ONLY $3.96 down from $4.15 near my house. I kept my eyes peeled for a tot lot that I could hit on the way home.
Oh yeah, I forgot about a school I had visited last year and it was only about a mile side trip. Sometimes I have a hard time quitting for the day.
Here is its picture:

A couple trinkets and 29 coins…only 6 of which were pennies! I love it when I find more clad than pennies. There was another school just down the road which was crowded with people watching a little league ball game and, as I drove by, thoughts of coins and jewelry lying everywhere danced through my head. I forced myself to drive the rest of the way home without looking for another place to detect. So, here are the totals for the day: 1 dollar coin, 35 quarters, 58 dimes, 41 nickels and 236 pennies adding to $19.96. If I had any idea how close I came to $20 I would have dug a few more pennies…towards the end I passed up a lot of penny signals and chose to only dig ones that said penny/dime as they are generally dimes. Sixty two of the pennies are copper, 6 are Canadian. Got home a little after 9. Here's the pictures (not including the pennies).

Today, I’m not doing anything! Good hunting everyone!
