researched the old topo maps last night, hoping for some old homesites near a large sandpit company in nearby town. (hoping to get some of those 'Sugar Sand' finds like you Carolina Hunters).
Nothing shown on the maps I had, I went anyway.
Spent most of the day back & forth, following rock walls, lots of falsing from the decayed barbed wire, Then, a solid copper hit, Draped Cent 1802, my best yet, the fraction is clear, though not in photo :dontknow: this alone would have made my day,
but the sun was out & high 30's, keep swingin.
next signal Figured another shotgun shell, Diggit, OMG, 58 Flying Eagle, And just fine condition.(couple light scratches) My First! came across a workshop or homesite, no foundation, iron blanking everything, pulled an axehead, 2 big old files, a big old brass plumbing trap, & 2 capguns, (my 2nd of the longhorn),
also a wheat Cent.
moving on, suns getting low, figure it's time to head back now, uh oh, another copper hit, Bingo! a '23 Large Cent! (think it's a 'narrow date', numbers are really close.
well I'm ready to call it a day, but ya know ya gotta clean this stuff, whoa, its a 1909 wheat, I remember there's some valuable ones out there, research, I'm looking for an S, no go, next a VDB, but where is it?, there it is, almost invisible at bottom reverse, Worth about 7 bucks, can't retire on this one,
BUT, My Best Day in a LONG TIME :hello2:
Thanks for Looking & HH to All!
Almost forgot this, bottom photo, is this my first barrel tap key?

You have a lot of persistance Will!! That's the best flying eagle I believe I have ever seen on here. Was that cap gun dug?? Looks to be in mint condition. Nice holiday finds. That place has more waiting, I'm sure :headbang:

thanks for your reply!
Cap gun was dug from an area where I believe a 20th century house stood & was cleared when they started the sandpit, the other side's plastic handle is not as nice, and there is substantial pitting on the barrel.
this is a nice capgun, functional, and the cylinder even rotates.
The eagle is becoming a mystery, cannot find a 58 with this reverse,
had almost no green, and didn't read as copper on my machine.
I thought it was a silver coin til I began research this morning.
have posted it in whatsit hoping for a variety ID.
Heres a link to the smaller 'Hubley Longhorn' capgun I found in the summer.

they must be well made, this one is also functional. if I remember correctly they are from 1940-1950. HH to You!

That was a great day, to bad the flying eagle wasn't two years older.
It and the draped bust are still on my wish list.

Sweet digs!!!!! WTG!!!!!
