When you guys trade up your halves do you just go get the best price for the 40%ers then use it to buy 90%ers?

I've not even considered selling my 40%'ers. I prefer to find my 90%'ers in the wild. Though with silver prices down a bit again, I'm considering adding more junk silver to that pile.

The only time i would ever trade silver for silver is

1. Im getting rid of extremely worn, bent or wholey halves and i see silver [at a show] at great prices - ie. cheaper then the price i sold for [yes more then once] or eagles at almost spot.

I traded in my 40% for Gold, when Silver was on the way down I sold all my "Junk" silver at 47.05 and waited two weeks. Sunk the majority of it in Gold.

I would never sell junk silver to junk silver. Junk silver to AEs, yes. Silver to gold, yes. HH Doug

That was a smart move. I was a day late and dollar short in that I was going to buy ZSL (double leveraged bear silver etf) at 50 or so and by the time I had the cash to put into my stock account the decline had began. Had I purchased when I wanted to I would have made a nice quick profit without the loss from premiums (on buy and sell side physical). I started buying physical in small amounts this past week though. Gonna keep buying as/if it falls more. Think we will see 50-75 by Christmas, in that historically fall and winter are when PMs ramp up, especially now as our economy/dollar situation is what it is.

Thanks for the replies but I think im going to keep the silver because the place I was going to trade up was only going to give me $3 a 40%er that is definatley not enough

About 4 weeks ago I sold $100 face 40% halves for $5.00 each and knew I left some money on the table, but needed the cash for some home improvements. I found all the coins coin roll hunting, so only had $100 invested and I look at the house repairs that cost 1 Grand as only costing me one hundred bucks. Wife was happy so I guess I was too.

If they were going to give you only $3 per 40% half, were they going to then sell you the 90%'ers at $10 per half or less? I seriously doubt the sell/buy spread would have been even remotely close to 20%. They wanted to pay you 57.5% of spot (currently spot is $5.22 per 40% half), but you can bet they won't sell you the 90% for anything near 78% of spot (currently spot is $12.77 per 90% half). Even with moderate margins, you should not trade up for more than a 20% sell/buy spread when 40% halves are being sold. The spread should be even less (10% or less) when trading up 90% halves for 99.99% fine silver, unless there is something special about the coin(s) that justify a higher margin.

I don't keep bulk at home, and the 40's take up too much room in the box. I sell as soon as I get a few rolls, regardless of melt, and trade up on 90% or SE's.

I asked the guy what he was selling bens for and said 25 and there were a couple 64 quarters that he wanted 10 for. Then silver dollars were 35. That's all I remember.

Looks like he's trying to buy at a bit more than half of spot price, and trying to sell at nearly double spot price. His best bargain is that silver dollar at 28.5% over spot. It depends on the actual silver dollar whether it's worth it or not, but most junk silver grade silver dollars can be bought for near spot or less if you look around enough. I highly recommend that you look for a different dealer.

Thanks this dealer has been very good for awhile but today he didn't do so well. I do not normally go to him because he is further away than my favorite dealer which is only 10 miles away compared to the 40 miles I have to drive to see him.
