It's your resident Coinstar hunter! I've been quiet but still gathering coins. Lately, I've not been able to look. However the coins...or in this case, bills, seem to be finding me!

Hahah! No Dave, that's my late boy and namesake Monster. Died a year ago. He was a good cat. On the subject of collectables, I think I might have to start doing some bankstrap hunting!

Too bad the government no longer upholds what that bill represents - $5 in silver. But you can take it to the store and buy $5 worth of silver - about 10 grams worth. Compare that to the 5 huge silver dollars that the bill could originally get you and you see how much value that $5 has lost in the past 60 years.

That’s a real cool find. Congrats

My wife got a number of $20 silver certificates a few years back. I was excited and bought them from her. When I checked with collectors, I was told they weren't worth any more than face value. Thought I had made a major score - wrong again! I still think they are really cool to find. You've got to wonder how many hands they passed through. Too bad they didn't have "Where's George?" back then.

You should be keeping an eye out for National Currency, Gold Certs and earlier United States Notes too.

you ought to buy a lottery ticket

that is great bill to get in change

since the US govt went off the "silver standard" in 1970 ...the last silver coins made for general use were 1970 half dollars (40% silver) the bills would not be redeemable in silver coinage any more sadly ….just like the 20 dollar 1933 era gold certs would not be "redeemed" with a 20 dollar gold coin from that ERA

That has to be a tough find in circulation these days ( maybe a result of home burglary ) nice find !
I had a home burglary last year and had one stolen! There's probably a red seal five out there too!

Forty dollars on the ground where do you guys live????!!!!

Guy I work with in Boston got a Silver Cert. 1 dollar in his change, then at the bar we cashed out of got a V nickel. Its crazy how many oldies are still circulating.

I wonder if the government it required to give you $5 in Silver on demand??

Cool find,, congratulations

There was a time limit for redeeming silver certificates that ran out sometime back in the 1960's.

My buddy in Illinois found one earlier in the year! It's beat to heck and he didn't take any pics of it after he flattened it out on a table.

I also took more pics of the Silver cert, it's quite nice for it's age!

My son working his first job at a fast-food joint has found 20+ wheaties, six silver dimes and three buffalo nickels. He’s not a collector but knows dad is. Those are just coins that caught his eye over a six month period.

Absolutely, fast food and working retail in cities you usually find these things. I frequent stores in run down or bad parts of town because I'm always on the hunt for coins/old stuff. Never been stuck up or robbed either, which is a plus. It's worth about $6.50 in that condition, but not much more. However as the years go by the value probably will go up.
