7,8 & 9TH COPPERS.DRAPED BUST HALF CENT

got out with foundationhunter to hit a site next to an open field. a few buttons and 3 coppers. 2 are totally wiped out one i think i can see the line where the date would be below.state copper or King George i'm guessin.never dug a half cent and have been wanting one badly.finally get one and its wasted :'( :'( oh well least i know it's a draped bust half cent.these ground conditions are so rough on these poor old colonial classics :-\

I love the feeling holding a freshly dug copper in your hand, even if they are in rough condition.

It is nice seeing bare ground without snow cover!
i know i'm so glad the snow is gone!

Hey Dave , At least you got an ID on that half cent . As far as cleaning coppers goes I think it is a case of personal judgement for each Individule coin . The Liberty cap I found last week end is a perfect case in point . I had already determined it was a right facing bust and suspected Liberty cap or perhaps even flowing hair before I cleaned it. The Patina looked very fragile so I wanted to be gentle no scrubbing ect.. so I elected to go with a quick peroxide bath and a pat dry only . I gently put the coin in the warm peroxide for 5 seconds and took it out and to my horror the patina and some of the detail was dissolving before my eyes . Too late now . How ever If I had never cleaned the coin I believe the patina wold have flaked off anyways . The Mass cent last year that made the banner never touched water or peroxide while cleaning . I used a dry acid or flux brush to remove what dirt it would then followed up with a Q-tip diped in olive oil and then diped in baking soda and gently scrubed in a circuar motion . and then repeat over and over with a fresh Q-tip till you like how it looks . I am not really giving advice or think I know better than you. I just want to point out again that in my opinion there is no one best way to clean a copper . It is a descion you have to make with every coin . With some it dosen't matter what what you do like you say they are toast ;D. 9 coppers already this year and it just turned April . You are well on your way to topping last year . Don't forget to have fun out there . Dave.

Re: 7,8 & 9TH COPPERS.DRAPED BUST HALF CENT

I would put that half cent in a protector and sleep with it under my pillow. That is, if I didn't have a heart attack after digging it up. Un"freakin"believable!
