$8000 in halves yeilds and Trip gets one box like "THE GOOD OLD DAYS"

So my hunting of late has been very minimal.
Reasons why.
1. I just buy from the employees who work at Loomis so when silver comes in, they sell it too me. So the reason a lot of silver is not found in boxes as much anymore is because at the source point its being pulled when possible. All they do is listen for it, They bring me halves, Quarters, dimes, Even the occasional silver eagle. but all they do is listen, and when the silver clinks they stop and search.
2. Too many people competing in the market. No Fun in skunk boxes. and people who bring in hand rolls are rare.
3. I am too darn busy running my gold and silver refinery now to worry about it. no real money in it and scores are rare.

However, I did just take a vacation and drove a 5000 mile circle for a family reunion and did a little half hunting on the side. Mostly midwest and east then south.

First week of hunting was dismal. out of $2000 in halves picked up it yielded 3 %40s and one %90 half. Everything else was dry dry dry. Either no halves, or CRH rejects with lots of little x's on them. yet in one of the boxes with x's on them I did find 3 rolls that yielded 4 %40 halves. in yet another cache of rejects of some $800 in halves. A lot of banks seem to just not want to carry them.

So the it seems that I wasted a lot of time but I tried one little bank while hunting and they said they had $500 worth, fine, I will take it all and maybe get a single if I am lucky...Then they come out with a cloth bag and start counting them out. All the rolls are fed warped, But Most of them were of a wrap that I had not seen in a long time, not yellow, and very dingy and frayed.
As she puts out the rows of 10 I can see silver on the tops. I cant believe it, its been a long time since I have seen them looking up at me.
about 1/3 of them were newer yellow fed wraps that had been dismal wastes of time.

I get so exited that my girlfriend and I stop and open them right away, the ones with the silver on top I put aside to open last.

we open roll after roll, the first one My girlfriend said Hey there are 3 in this one. Sweet! each old roll yields one or two 40% coins just like boxes used too. I date check the halves and I found nothing newer than 1997 in the lot. had this horde been sitting there for that long?
After a nice little pile of %40 add up we hit the rolls we put aside,
First one with one showing on the top. only 1, next one had 4, Another had 3, then my girlfriend said, hey this one had a %40 on each end.
She opened it, and to my shock all but one were Silver. 19 %40s in one roll. I just looked at her and said, you realize that just doesn't happen anymore! In fact I had not gotten one like that since I found a box dated 2003 and 1/3 of the box was silver. Even that one didn't have a near solid roll.
So the box yielded 81 %40 halves. Not a bad deal, Based on silver value it was almost like the box was free from the bank!

So I am sure this is not the last post of such a find, but they will be few and far between. All the half hunter can really rely on is being in the right place at the right time.
Before the guys at loomis started garbing it i was ordering 10k a week and sorting, and when the results became dismal. it stooped. It was not long after that they contacted us about buying the silver. I am sure the occasional dime and the occasional coin of silver gets past them, and they do, but if you expect to find boxes that have a coin collection or somebodies grandpa died and the family just deposited it in a coin counter, They get snaped up by the tellers who know better or at the sort facility now days. They know there is silver out there and take the chance to get it when it shows up, particularly in bulk, Just too much money there now to avoid it. or pass on it. Fact of life.

the trip as far as coin hunting was not a waste. I stoped in one coin shop in Oklahoma and saw a coin in a case that was way undervalued. I asked how much for that ******* the guy said $920, "I will take it" and I was able to walk out with a $3000 coin On Ebay people are asking $5000 for the same thing so I could dump it at $3000 easy, So a 5 min stop more than paid for the vacation, and a stop at one bank paid for all the gas.

It was a nice reminder of how the gold old days of CRH used to be like. But a harsh reminder of how dismal hunting has become.

it was because of Tnet I learned about CHR and pulled tens of thousands of dollars of silver out by being an opportunistic bastard and hit hard on it. it was fun while it lasted and was a great boost to business but I never expected it to last forever.

So the %40 halves I picked up will be melted later this week to make fine silver. Just like the rest of them, and added to the inventory. I had a great trip and maybe someday I will find another killer but once was normal score. but I dont count on it.

quick question, how do they find silver eagles?? I have yet to see a coin counting machine that accepts large dollars. I've never even heard of one that does.

Re: $8000 in halves yeilds and Trip gets one box like "THE GOOD OLD DAYS"

interesting.

Re: $8000 in halves yeilds and Trip gets one box like "THE GOOD OLD DAYS"

I asked them that and they said they found it mixed in a batch of halves. it would not have gone though the machine obviously. there best guess is some teller tossed it in there so it would be someone elses problem. it was jammed up and scratched pretty good, it was a 1996, I still have it.

They got a gold sovereign once too, they said they got it in the reject bin in the big sorter. At the time I paid them around $200 for it.

a lot of trash ends up in halve bags, as its the largest slot. Anyone who has bought a bag off of a machine knows what I am talking about, buttons, electrical plugs, paper clips, some jewelry, bits of odd metal, Just junk people had in the pocket and ended up in the change jar then dumped at the bank. occasional non us coins and tokens. some machines reject into the half bag. i have found bent pennies and quarters in them too. If it could be in someones pocket, it could end up in a change bag.

even more bizarre is what a friend of mine who buys from the coin star guys tells me in one area. they have found silver dollars and eagles in flips that people tried to jam into the machines. got frustrated and tossed them onto the top of the machine.

So here is some free advice, if there is a coin star machine, if you can look on top you may be surprised what you will find. we all know to look in the reject slot.

these machines also turned up nice surprises in the reject bins as they have an internal reject bin as well.
Internal reject bin = Extra profit for the company.

The people who work in the industry have no obligation to give away what is otherwise dumped or tossed away. And if they can keep it them selves and make extra money...they do.

just like the CHR looking to score some extra profit. Bigger companies and the people who work for them do too. If there is money in anything, someone will go after it.

Re: $8000 in halves yeilds and Trip gets one box like "THE GOOD OLD DAYS"

those are some very detailed posts, I learned something today, thanks for sharing!! There are no coinstars in my area since all other coin machines are free(and there are plenty of them)... unfourtinately that means no CWR's.

Re: $8000 in halves yeilds and Trip gets one box like "THE GOOD OLD DAYS"

And the coin carriers dont cull silver....first hand experience here. Maybe not everywhere but Daves area is. Dave what area you in if you dont might sharing a general area?

Re: $8000 in halves yeilds and Trip gets one box like "THE GOOD OLD DAYS"

If I were the teller that tossed a silver eagle, I would have just bought it for a dollar instead of throwing it into a bag. To me that's just stupid. But then again some banks don't allow their tellers to buy any coin from their own branch. Either way it's cool that you got it. How much do those workers sell silver to you for??

Interesting. So your friend(s) are allowed to carry money in and out of the sorting area on their person?

Re: $8000 in halves yeilds and Trip gets one box like "THE GOOD OLD DAYS"

who knows how much money they are stealing, a half dollar here, a half dollar there, just slip it in their pockets when nobody is looking. before you know it, they have hundreds of dollars worth of silver they got for free. I am assuming if someone works in the sorting area, they are checked before going in and when they leave??

From what I have been told employees are suppose to go through a metal detector and not allowed to carry anything on their person when entering and leaving the sort area. Only eyeglasses and watches. No jewelry (including wedding rings). No wallets, purses, etc.

Re: $8000 in halves yeilds and Trip gets one box like "THE GOOD OLD DAYS"

I mean no disrespect...but when I first read this, my instincts interpreted it as:

an attempt to thwart off newbies.
reminiscing on the old days compared to the present.

It does give one a hopeless feeling that there is no silver out there. So the only way to find out, is to get out there, get your hands dirty, and come to your own conclusions on what is, or what is not out there.

Re: $8000 in halves yeilds and Trip gets one box like "THE GOOD OLD DAYS"

I've just read it on the internet, so it must be true.

I was quite shocked when they brought it too me as well. yet it is what it is.
weather true or not, I have heard stories of people who spent silver eagles because they did not know, and its not from just one source either, many customers of mine have told me a story, most of them are, I saw a guy in line a couple people in front of me spend them then the people behind them and in front of me got them...and on some occasions the people who saw them spent or deposited got to buy them from some teller. I have seen some in tellers trays and they say not for sale or exchange. Yes it happens.
we must keep in mind that not everyone out there thinks the same way we do when it comes to Silver and gold. I remember seeing a news artical a couple years back where someone tried to spend $20 gold eagles at walmart, They teller would not take them, so they took them to the bank. the bank teller bought them then sold them to the local coin store for something like $12000 at the time. then the teller got fired and as far as I know they never figured out who the person who exchanged them in was...fact is, things like that happen.
Think of it in terms like this, say someone has or sees some beanie baby at a garage sale for a dollar and its worth $400, you and I would not know that...or care, so what, its some dumb stuffed animal. Fact is, Some of those things were worth that and more at one time. The same time when silver was $4 an ounce and no one wanted it. So when someone finds some metal coin that says its worth a dollar, and they spend it at a dollar store for some toilet paper, they are ok with that.

I give the contracted guys the contracted rate on silver what I pay them is my business, most 90% I am a little under spot Most sterling I pay 90% on, Gold I pay up to 95-98%
I have more details on my site www.prospectorsgoldandgems.com

Apparently many of the above posts referring to BS etc dont know who I am and what I do. I can forgive them for that. a lot of people think that CRH is BS too until they make that first find, I know I was, I had to go prove it wrong, I will show them...then I found silver, and went from there. the only BS I deal with is Bullion Silver

Re: $8000 in halves yeilds and Trip gets one box like "THE GOOD OLD DAYS"

The BS stands for Bullion Silver in my pockets :)

Yeah I was one of the BS supporters....But that was funny man. :icon_thumright:

It's still out there, imo.

Your friends at Brinks are breaking rules though. As long as it ends up in your pockets....good for you.

Re: $8000 in halves yeilds and Trip gets one box like "THE GOOD OLD DAYS"

its still out there and for those who hunt and network you can still get some here and there, its just not like it was. in 2007 when i started i was pulling 30 to 50 face in 90% out each week, and 2 to 5 times that in 40%. it was a beautiful thing to open boxes and see bens and walking liberties looking up at you. even the occasional barber. Although I only ever got two of them, both in the same box.
I used to buy a lot from the guys who would CHR locally, And as I noticed the amounts get smaller and smaller so did the takes they had too, I also noticed more guys at the bank, tellers making comments like, didnt you come in yesterday or aren't you supposed to be here tomorrow, Sure signs of other CHR in the area.
Skunk boxes are no fun. and there are plenty out there now, so i hardly do it. this is my first post on here in months, I used to post all the time.
yes, its annoying its not like it used to be.
but, the fact still remains that occasionally people will get lucky and happen across a collection that was turned in. Know the right people and questions to ask and over all find some. What was once dependable is now not. I was amazed the two hard years of hunting paid off as well as it did, it took a lot of orders from loomis directly and clearing out the back rooms but in time it happened. the last time I did 5 boxes locally I got one %40 half...not worth my time. I dont stand to benefit at all by chasing people off, i want people hunting, i want them selling to me. i want them buying from me. I want to provide my services of coining gold and bar making of silver to spread. I was just telling some stories that people might find interesting

The guys I am working with are the management and we are under contract.

I wish I could get some of the other contracts they have, like the foreign coins, basically money for free on exchange rate that you can buy by the pound.

that is another free tip, when your at a bank ask for the non us Coins, like the Canada, euros, Mexico, pounds etc. its free money they give away, I have made a couple hundred bucks extra selling EXrate coins. the best is when i was able to buy scrap gold with pesos in coin and the people were traveling to Mexico. they were grateful because in Mexico a lot of the local vendors say they dont have change when gringos hand them bills. So they would be able to buy with exact change and not get scammed.

Should be working just fine. No i am not a millionaire, a multi thousand-aire yes, but you dont make millions working on %3 to %10 margins.
I have a modest home two older cars and an industrial building I do my work out of. I make wedding bands, do gold smithing and coin and bullion dealing on the side. CRH is what got me started on the coins end of things, it provided a few hundred dollars extra per week and there was nothing wrong with that.
