Stopped by the castle Giechburg on the way home from a business trip for a quick break. The castle was originally built around 1125 on a prehistoric/bronze age settlement, there are a few intact bowls dating 2500 BC on display in the hotel but I miffed the pictures of them, low light. A distant view of the castle driving to it.

A closer view of this beautiful castle and its defensive positions. At least three wars were fought here, this last reconstruction made it impenetrable to the attacking Swedes in the 1600s and this stationary object won the war. Amazing since cannon were well developed by then. There are six turrets and many other defensive positions built into it. The castle is closed for touring so all the turrets and halls and tower were locked until spring.

A small tower within the court yard, a much larger square tower to the left dwarfs this tower.

Inside of the small tower, note the steps were built into the walls and cork screwed around to the top, the steps appear to have been cut off.

A look down the deep well, has water in it.

This handsome gargoyle greets you at the bottom of the large tower. Looks like he is puckered up for a kiss, smooch!

Caught this beautiful shot of a monument leaving the castle area. These small stone monuments are all over Bavaria, have one in front of my house as well. They are erected to honor or remember some kind of incident, I don?t have a thorough understanding of them.

Here?s a close up of the monument and a translation. ?This monument was erected to honor holy Trinity 1868?

Here are the finds from a field I hunted for an hour this week, it was very frozen and I was lucky to get out. Found a 14K gold ring and an 1855 silver coin here last week. Had a great week in spite of old man winter, LOL! HH, Mike

Cool Mike looks like a awesome old place to hunt. I bet there's more for you to find around there. It's a large area. Nice pics and good luck with the site.

You never fail to post REALLY cool stuff! Nothing here in CA much older than a strip mall...Your gargoyle, I believe might be just a grotesque, as it doesn't have water comming out of it! god I'm a dork...Only castles I've been in are in Ireland/England/Switzerland...and most of them touristy ones...Keep the pix comming!

Great photographs :), but you know if we had any castles like that in the USA I'm sure they would be named a historical landmark and there would be no metal detecting allowed. :(

Thanks for the great comments! I did not detect around the castle, they are also historical landmarks here and it takes a special permit to do so. My oldest coin here in Germany is a silver hammered 1305ish Bohemian Prager Groeschen. My prized relic is a seal matrix with an archer, coat of arms and the initials MR, around 400 years old. 16F this morning, Brrr! HH, Mike

? ? ?Nice going Bavaria Mike,? the castle shots are nice, hunting places with such a legendary history has to get the heart pumping . The piece that could come out of the next holes could be a one of a kind gold relic held by some important figure in ancient History.? With all that said ,Good luck on your next adventure !!? Keep Posting those Castle Pics.........Seeker? ?
