Jst got in from my first hunt with the new Ace 250. Took my son along and we dug up a 3 pence from 1944. It was next to a pack horse bridge that dates from the mid-1700's. Also found an old rifle cartridge and some rusty nails.

The ground here is wet and chock full of rocks, so I have given up using the trowel and gone to a full sized shovel to dig. Very time consuming, but it's the only way to do it. To top it off, the house I'm in is a 400 year old barn conversion in the Yorkshire Dales, so there is lots of rusty deposits that read like a coin (at least to my cherry ears). Lots of fun, though.

Also, I'd like to plug the folks from whom I just purchased my 250.

It was a breeze buying it, with nice goodies and they shipped to an APO- no problems. I highly recommend them if you are in the market for a new MD.

Johnny

Nice old find Johnny, great pic too. We woke up to 2" of the white stuff, so I'm sure I won't have any pictures to post for a while...

John,

welcome to the site.

Sounds like you have some interesting sites in the area your at.? Keep us posted.

Hate those areas that are, "chock full of rocks"; but perhaps more than a few
folks with detectors have passed them up as being too much trouble to detect.
Could hold some good finds.

have a good un..............

Sounds like good father son time. I sure you're in for more adventures metal detecting.

I gave up on the trowel a long time ago. Now I just drag my full sized shovel around behind me.

What are your hunting goals? Got to set some goals!

I'm really hoping to find Roman/Viking coins and/or artifacts. Continued hunting today after this post and discovered an old pocketknife at ten inches and an old iron sitting right on top. One of those put on the stovetop types.

Just don't tell anyone .LOL

You know, that's what I thought, too. The truth is the UK is one of the most detector friendly places to hunt in the Western world. The laws here really encourage detectorists to hunt. Any object over 300 yrs old or any cache of more than eight coins should be reported. If the find is determined to be historic, the finder is entitled to dollar (pound) value. About 2/3 of all historic finds in the UK are made my detectorists. I wish our government would take some pointers from the Brits instead of prosecuting.

Birdman, what do you do in Germany? AFSC?

I have a brother who lives in England and have been thinking about going over for a visit (and naturally my DFX will have to tag along).

Gadd!! If I were digging in the U.K. I think my primary goal would be not to stick my shovel onto something about 60-90 years old that goes BANG and ruins my whole day;D
