A couple hours with the Safari today

Went to the 1700 French Fort and spent a couple hours .
Just to check it out and I just took my small digger, wow won't do that again.
Next time I'll take a spade with me;-)
Found some copper , some lead , what looks like a end off a drawer pull and a shotgun shell end
Be going back for more tomorrow for more

I'll second that. Never bring a hand tool in a field with a safari or etrac. I dug a piece of an old iron stone today at probably 18". Rang up around the coin range and I would have given up had I not had my big shovel

What do you guys use when in the field and need a big hole , a spade or something special?

A shovel. I have lesche and Sampson shovels and also a really nice kobalt D handle 4 foot shovel I usually use in soft soil cause it opens a big neat plug and where I hunt is usually woods or fields that are cut or plowed

Hi Bigdob. I use a garden shovel that's about 6 inches wide and about 9 inches deep. I don't know your experience level with the Safari, but I'm still trying to learn all of the ins and outs of mine. GL and HH.

Yup its called a tree spade. Its a narrow long shovel with a medium length handle. They cost $20-25 at Walmart or hardware store. I put a short loop of rope through the handle so I can sling it on my shoulder and it looks less obtrusive when I cross streets etc. I do a small horseshoe around the target of at least three 2-8inch cuts (depending on depth) then pry it gently up from the front and keep the plug together with my other hand. It flips up like a lid and is really neat when you put back in place.

I decided on a Lesche Sampson digging shovel.
Got a good deal and it will be here tomorrow.
I have a lot of field hunting to do and this will be a nice fit.
Got a nylon utility belt to put the hanger for the shovel , pinpointer, and small digging tool on and leave them there.
Just snap it on and go.
