What sort of terrain are they found in? I have never found them before.

I normally find them in wooded area’s near dead wood. After a good rain in the spring they pop out. Don’t seem to grow much around oaks.

Up here I find them in areas where there are cottonwood trees.

Here (SE Iowa) They are in areas of vegetation that get morning light, especially east-facing hillsides.

These were in my yard (sand) near a lot of walnut trees; not really typical.

I cut them in halves end-to-end and soak in weak salt water to clean. Drain well and dip in beaten egg, coat with fine cracker crumbs and saute in a skillet with melted butter.
