A name for this pretty rock please :)

....it's a dark wine color with blue spots...was wondering what it's called? And the other is just pretty worm wood... thanks!

can you see light through it? It almost looks like mahogany obsidian. I love worm wood too.

i honestly dont know ccat, but if want a name ,i would call it chuck, looks like a chuck,lol just kidding, i wonder what the blue is?i like mamas guess!

The fracture lines are much rougher than obsidian would have. Without being able to hold it for examination, I would say it's jasper (an opaque form of chalcedony) and the blue is flecks of agate or bluish white chalcedony. It will also be harder than obsidian. Kat, you've just gotta read up on the Moh's scales of hardness, most hardness tests can be performed with common household items, and tell lots about rocks. I believe your specimen here will test out at or near seven which most chalcedonies will do.

...thanks guys for helping on this. No, not obsidian. You know gunsil, think it could be a "jasper", we have so much of that around here, just didn't know it came in a dark red wine color, come to think of it...does jasper come in "all" colors? Think maybe I have part of an arrowhead that's lavender jasper, very pretty color....going to post it here to see..........yup...it does look like jasper alright...thanks gunsil!

Yes Kat, jasper comes in an amazing and seemingly endless variety of colors. Your broken arrowhead does also look like jasper.
