A "Returning" Day
Yesterday I had one of the strangest days of detecting in a long time. It started early in the morning at the local school after the fireworks the night before. I picked up a little over $9.00 in coins and found a cell phone. I tried to call the number listed as "mom", but it wouldn't call, so I called Verizon and they were able to locate the owner (she had called it in the night before, so it was suspended). Her dad came by and picked it up. He was relieved.
In the evening, I decided to go to one of the local swimming areas (not a beach) and do some detecting just to be out and someplace cool. I wasn't in the water 5 minutes when a guy came "running" (as fast as you can in the water) over and said he was so glad to see me. He had lost his wedding ring the day before and had actually gone out and bought a cheap Bounty Hunter which he had wrapped in plastic and managed to break the rod on it. He was out there looking around and using a colander to dig with. It took me about 10 - 15 minutes to find the ring. He was so happy. He offered a $50 reward which I declined, but he insisted. He came back about 20 minutes later with it. I decided to put it in the car and as I was getting to shore, another guy was looking frantically around in the water. He saw me and asked if I could find his keys. He had dropped them jumping into the water. That only took about 2 minutes. About an hour later, I saw two guys and a girl looking in the water and walking slowly. I asked them what they lost and one of them had lost his sunglasses. As it turned out, they were plastic with no metal on them, but I happened to feel the coil go over them and waited for the water to clear before calling them over and showing them laying on the bottom. They were happy. It's funny because a little before the one lost his sunglasses, they were teasing me about looking for buried treasure. They all apologized profusely after that!
I found a little less than $2 in change and a sterling silver ring, but had a great time helping others. I was so glad that I was able to find all the items. I know a lot of people have a very different view of detectorists now.
