I've been searching dimes for almost a year. About six months ago, I was on the verge of never searching dimes again due to finding absolutely nothing.

At that time, I had searched at least $5,000 in Brinks clear wraps and had not discovered the first silver dime.

On the advice of many people on this forum, I switched to CWR's and String rolls. I am averaging one silver dime per $135, give or take some.

To date, I have searched a conservative minimum amount of $6,500 worth of Brinks clear wraps, and have still yet to find the first silver. But, when searching Brinks rolls, I don't find Canadian dimes or British 5 pence coins either.

I do find lots of Canadian and foreign coins in String rolls, often finding as many as 10 foreign coins per $100 searched.

While I don't believe Brinks has employees standing around culling silver out of the system, I do theorize that the coin counters they use may pull and reject silver, as well as foreign coins, just as my local dump bank's coin counter does.

I know that some posters do well with Brinks clear wraps. Perhaps their local Brinks sorting facility uses different coin machines. I would also believe that it is plausible that Brinks uses different coin counters within the same facility, helping explain why some in my area are getting decent boxes on occasion, but I am getting solid skunks.

I've had lengthy discussions with the silver hound tellers at several local banks, and they say that they have never once found a silver dime in any Brinks clear wraps.

If my theory is true, it would explain why at least one poster on this forum says that he buys silver on a routine basis from both Brinks and Loomis employees.

With that said, it would be easy for a Brinks employee to check the reject tray, and cherry pick it for silver.

What do you think?

But near impossible to make it past the metal detector.

Its like the jello of the month club Clark, its the gift that keeps on giving.

Im not sure what company my clear wrappers come from tho i do get silver from them even it is a little less then the paper wrapped. I also found my oldest seated liberty in a clear wrapper.

I have found the same thing.

If you have Canadians and other wild cards, you find silver.

If not, no silver, so I think you are right on.

The CWR's are key if you can't find another shipping source.

Keep on Rollin' !

I agree.

Brinks clear wraps produce nothing at all for me. I know the tellers very well at my pick up bank. They are super-duper silver hounds, and tell me that they never find silver in Brinks dimes. I've heard it from other tellers too at two other banks.

But String rolls produce well for me. No killer finds as of yet, about 1 per $135, +/-. As well, those String rolls are loaded with foreign coins.

I do OK with Brinks dimes, about 1-2 silver per box on average. It may be that some facilities counting/sorting equipment rejects silver and foreign, and the equipment used in other facilities does not. That makes a lot more sense than Brinks doing some sort of intentional culling. I do also find a lot of foreign. I get tons of Panamanian dimes (although those happen to be the same composition and dimensions as US dimes and probably would pass for US dimes in most machines anyway, and it doesn't matter because they're pegged to the US dollar).

As it happens, Brinks is the only game in town around here, so it's good that I find stuff in them, considering I don't have a choice.

What you theorize is indeed possible. A more plausible explanation IMO is that you have 1 or more high volume dime CRHers dumping into your Brinks system. Also, as you stated, some coin counters reject silver. Maybe an abnormally high number of the banks that have silver rejecting coin counters use Brinks in your area. If little to no silver makes it to Brinks in the first place, then little to no silver can come from there.

I would love to get some Brinks clear wrapped dimes. Every bank within 50+ miles of me uses Loomis, so I get the good ol' String/Sons wrappers and have skunked on roughly 7 of every 8 boxes lifetime. The clear wrappers would be a nice change of pace.

Why not get the machines that sort out ALL the silver at ALL the facilities??? Seems to me, they would pay for themselves pretty quick :dontknow:

I would find it naive for Brinks, Loomis Exec management to not have discussed this. I'm sure they have probably done the calculations on it to see at what silver price it would make it worth it. One would have to think it has been discussed, I mean, "know everything about your business" right? What a missed opportunity for these guys not to cull silver.

heres another couple of speculative possibilities, perhaps...

CRH'ers buy a box. skim through without having to open the rolls. dump the skunk rolls. having already been rolled (is there any way to realistically home-roll the clear wraps? enough of a chance that they would refuse them or have to open the rolls?) they just go back into the system already rolled.

how mechanized/monitored might the packing of those rolls be? if theres one person at the output of one rolling machine checking for bad rolls or whatever, watching for those glints of silver could be feasable. it might not be entirely inconceivable(to me, anyway) that a person in such a position might be able to arrange to buy a certain amount of coins from any rolls that were not suitable for boxing if they were so inclined, as long as they documented it or something. if that were the case, SOME portions of boxes being completely dead for silver, where others(without such a person) would have some, is a reasonable possibility, I think.

or, perhaps the second one, but minus the legitimacy. if a person were so inclined (I'm sure as hell not, but I doubt it'd be hard to find people who were) I bet you could fit a couple of dimes under your toungue or something. and if you had fillings, they couldn't set a metal detector to catch coins but not fillings, eh? and are they going to check your mouth every time you come out? I doubt it.

edit: or, well, the same idea, but just going into a special bin for the company's purposes.

To add even more mystery to Clovis's dime skunks I must add my details..

We basically hunt the area. By this I don't mean we hunt the same neighborhoods and go to the same bank, but rather we use the exact same coin processing plant. Unless Brinks has multiple facilities for the area, we "should" be searching the same coins. But alas, I'm scoring plentifully on the brinks clear wraps and hes getting skunked. In fact just last week I did 6 boxes and pulled 15 silver dimes.

Something clearly does not add up. I firmly do not believe that Brinks culls silver in my area. I've pulled over 30 halves and 30 dimes from it since I got here a month ago. There is something to be said though about perhaps multiple coin machines.

For instance take the following into consideration.

Bank 1 and Bank 2. Same company, same coin processor Both of these banks are within 20 miles or so and one of them I use as my dump bank.

Bank 1: (11) Box Halves Skunk Streak BUT great bank for dimes
Bank 2: at least 1 40% in almost every box. But have never scored a single dime

Something is very fishy about the same bank company in the exact same area yielding very different silver

Multiple Machines, Feeding different banks?

By the way I dump every single coin I open in a coin counter. I never turn in filled dime wrappers.

I work in a place that orders about a box of coins from brinks of every denomination about once a day and luckily for me i can always snag a peak in them before they go out and just by rim checking them, i almost always find at least one dime per box and a quarter about every 2-3 boxes so i don't think brinks is doing anything different than any other company at least not in my area.

Brinks dimes in my area: 1 silver dime every $650-750...

I generally avoid clear wraps, but up here where I am for college nearly all the banks use clear wrapped coins. I haven't gotten the chance to search through a box of them, but I've done about $50 in dimes, all skunks. Done about $150 in nickels total with 1 war nickel. And probably have done about $40 in pennies, found a good amount of copper in them, and some wheats but nothing exciting.

It does make you wonder about the different Brinks dime clear wraps.

As a side note, I've got a 25 box skunk streak going with halves, but I have found silver in Brinks half dollar boxes.

I wonder how the other Indy area CRH's are doing with Brinks boxes?

It's unlawful for coin processors to pull silver. Even more unlawful for them to turn around and sell said silver. If an employee does it, they are breaking the law.

It depends on how the coin processors take ownership of the coin (or if they don't) and the state laws.

For example, if a coin processing company buys $500 in halves from a bank, it is their coin to sort through silver just as if you or I bought it. On the other hand, if they just take possession of the coins but not the ownership, they can't cherry pick silver because it isn't theirs, just like the post office can't go through mail, they don't own it.

From my understanding, which includes observation of time stamps, and conversations with vault tellers. BRINKS services the large majority of coin in Indiana. When I used to order coins from the Fort Wayne area I would get Indianapolis time stamped boxes. If you do a google maps search for Brinks, all that comes up is Brinks Inc. In downtown Indianapolis.

It basically seems to me that all the coins in Indiana go through this processing facility. If that is the case there almost MUST be different machines inside this facility. If you think about the sheer number of Banks in Indiana that service through Brinks, the coin amount would be absolutely massive. I can't fathom a single machine does everything.

Maybe one giant mother machine, that sends out to little machines for sorting? I would love to talk to someone from Brinks to find out.
